The Year 2003 - The Period October / December

2003年，10月至12月期间.

I was working in Thailand at that time, working as a property consultant and property valuer for Patsupat Realty, doing property-assessment and feasibility exercises for property developers, mortgage evaluations for banks, and property rating system from the Royal Thai Government. Additionally, because of the influence that the Managing Director of the firm had with the Assumption University, I was lecturing in Property related subjects for the newly founded department of Real Estate at Assumption University. I was also studying for a doctoral degree in Religious Philosophy at that time. What a busy schedule for a 63-year-old gent!

So, one can imagine how happy and relaxed I was when I returned for a holiday to my hometown, Auckland, New Zealand for the period October, November and early December in the year 2003.

You know the feeling when you have just arrived back at the airport of your hometown, don’t you? Is it the feeling of relieve? Yes, but no, not like relieve of a burden. Is it the feeling of happiness? Yes, but no, not like the happiness of say the thought of reunion with family members. Perhaps, the body is telling me to relax - that sort of feeling. “You are now away from your work desk,” sort of feeling and it is hard to describe.

There to greet me at the airport’s waiting area was my dear wife and my cheerful son. I turned around just before the exit gate and had a last glimpse of the bagging area. “Goodbye, but I’ll be back again,” I whispered to myself. I did the hugs and the kisses and stepped into my son’s car heading for Gerard Way, my home. Home?

After a rest, my wife and I went to see our young grandson, only ten months old at that time. He was a happy young bundle of joy - so cute!

The comfortable home in Auckland was like heaven compared to the apartment I was living then in Bangkok’s so-called posh district of Sukumvit Soi 24. Just look at the entrance just inside the front entrance door! Then look at the dining area just next to the lounge. The look from the outside was great too and those were the days before we put up a brick fence around the boundary at this corner site. Why did we build the brick boundary wall, I just wonder. It is definitely not for security reason as the area is a very safe and quiet neighbourhood.

How scenes changed? Many shopping malls got bigger and here, the Manukau City Shopping Centre was not different from the rest of other shopping malls, getting bigger and perhaps better. Here at the Foodcourt, I did feel that the place was heaps cleaner and better spaced than those in Bangkok. The food served here, although on the surface looked dearer, but the meals were healthier, less spicy, and perhaps better quality than back in Ma Boon Krong, Bangkok.
