My story here starts in the year 1954, months before Singapore’s first Legislative Assembly Elections in 1955 when Lee Kuan Yew won his seat in Tanjong Pagar. I was then 16 years old, a secondary student at Singapore’s Victoria School, then located at Jalan Besar. I stayed in Chinatown’s Jiak Chuan Street within walking distance from Tanjong Pagar.
