NERDLE Number Game for March 2023

google ‘nerdle’ and we shall get a blank table of cells - six rows of eight cells per row. The six rows show the six guesses or attempts at getting the right equation store in the computer for the day. When we are unable to guess the right equation, we lost the game. When we can guess the right solution within the six attempts we win the game.

As a start, it is logical for us to use five different digits with the multiplication sign ( * ) in the second position, the addition sign ( + ) in the fourth position, and the equal sign ( = ) in the sixth position. The result of our first guess basing on this logical formula will assist us with the next guesses. Here we use: 6 * 4 + 3 = 2 7. Result: Equal sign is in the wrong position. Because the ( * ) and the ( + ) signs are not in the solution, the equal sign ( = ) has to be in the seventh position as the chance of having a single digit answer is high. Digits 4 and 7 are colored purple - wrong positions.

Second attempt: 4 9 / 7 - 7 = 0. Result: The deduction sign ( - ) is not in the solution. The division sign ( / ) is colored purple. So, the equation has only one division sign in the fourth position and we need to rearrange and find two factors that can be multiplied together to get a three digit answer in the first three digits. We have to use trial an error process to do this, looking at the digits that we now have available:

4 7 0 / 9 4 = 5. as the third attempt. Result: All Green - Correct. Logic. Fix digit 0 at the third position. What two factors can produce a ‘ 0 ‘ in position three, using digit ‘ 5 ‘ as the answer? What is the number to be carried forward to produce an answer of four hundred something. The first digit limits our search to only the factors 5 and 4. 5 * 4 = 20, place 0 in position three, carrying the 2 forward. 5 * 9 = 45 plus the 2 carried forward equals 47.

Thursday 2nd March 2023.

(1) 2 * 8 + 3 = 1 9. Result: again the equal sign ( = ) is not in the correct position and again, both the ( * ) and the ( + ) signs are not in the solution. We shall move the equal sign to the seventh position.

(2) 16 / 4 - 4 = 0. Here we are testing the the presence of ( / ) and ( - ) in the solution. Result: Division ( / ) is not in the solution but the deduction ( - ) is colored green. This the solution must have two deduction signs in the third and the fifth positions.

(3) 1 5 - 7 - 7 = 1. Looking back, we have forgotten that digit 6 is in the solution. The second digit ‘ 1 ‘ is not in position 8. We shall shift this digit ‘ 1 ‘ to the second position.

(4) 1 1 - 4 - 1 = 6. All colored green. Correct.

Attempt # 1: 6 * 3 + 7 = 2 5. The same rule applies to the first equation - five different digits; multiplication sign in the second position; addition sign in the fourth position; and the equal sign in the sixth position.

The result of the first attempt can be summarized thus: ” * ” in the second position is correct -colored green. ” + ” sign is not in the solution. The equal sign is not in the sixth position. We will have to change the position of the equal sign. If we move this to the fifth position we will have a three digit answer to the equation and with the addition sign not in the solution and the multiplication sign in the second position, we consider this highly unlikely.

So, our second attempt is 3 * 6 - 1 4 = 4. Result, digits 3 and 6 still not in the correct positions but the equal sign is now determined to be in the seventh position. The deduction sign in the fourth position is also confirmed.

Third attempt: 8 * 9 - 6 3 = 9. All correct.
