Lee Kuan Yew’s Birthday Wish 1983

I must thank one of the readers in forwarding to me this piece of article from the past. In a difficult time facing a young nation like Singapore such as now, it is important for all concerned to reflect on the fact that the Honorable Mr. Lee Kuan Yew had wanted to keep his private affairs private. I shall make my comments on this speech by Mr. Lee at the appropriate junctures within the quoted speech below. Someone’s remarks at the beginning of the speech are also relevant here and this is quoted here: “Over the years, Lee has kept […]

Misconception of a Dream

Perhaps it is best to start with a TED talk by a Singapore, a Nominated Member of Parliament and a self-made entrepreneur, Kuik Shiao-Yin.   Her story is a wonderful one - one from an ordinary person and how she was pushed into opportunities but then realized that a successful ‘dream’ was one that ticked all the boxes of small everyday decisions toward just one goal, the unity of the team members. She is a nominated Member of the Singapore Parliament now and her speeches are thought-provocating and well worth noting - pardon her Singlish intonations, of course. Her story may well […]

Should Te Reo Maori be compulsory in NZ Schools?

My answer to the above question is “Yes”. I am glad to note that the Principal of Auckland Grammar School in Auckland, Mr. Tim O’Connor agrees with this too and has made Te Reo Maori a compulsory subject for all Year Nine (Form 3) students. Tim had said: “We undertook a review of the curriculum in 2015 and one of the strong threads that (is) coming through at that point in time was that we should be introducing Mandarin… for various reasons, including the impact on trade. “At that point in time, the question we asked ourselves was why would we […]

Scratch - Computer Digital Coding for Kids

What is Scratch? Scratch is a simple computer coding system developed by students at MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) for children to program and to share interactive stories, games, and animation with the public. As they create such programs, they are learning logical thinking and to reason out issues systematically. Perhaps we shall start by letting you or your child look at some computer inventions designed and coded by young children aged between the ages of five and ten. I am only human

How often do we think that we humans can control our environment. Climate change advocates want to legislate to prevent carbon emission into the atmosphere. But can we control nature? No matter how much carbon we emitted into our atmosphere, our days are warmer, sunnier, dryer and the icebergs are melting away every day. Let me tell you of my belief. Yes, we are moving closer and closer towards the sun, somehow. At the same time, somewhere else in the solar system, another planet (perhaps now going through the earth’s ice age trillions of years ago) is moving or evolving […]

America’s Cup - New Zealand’s Cup

I was excited about the America’s Cup, on Monday night, 28th June 2017. I was determined to watch the final race of the match live on Sky TV the next morning 29th June. In my mind, I was wondering - could this be a repeat of the year 2013 challenge when New Zealand was 8 races to 1 race on the winning side only to lost the Cup when Spithill of USA Oracle won eight races in a row to make it 9 races to 1 to snatch the Cup away from New Zealand. I went to bed early that Monday […]
