Learn Mandarin through Songs

I was born in Singapore in 1940. I am of Chinese descent, my father was an indented worker from Panyu, Guangzhou ( formerly Canton). My education was essentially English, British English during the colonial days. From young in Chinatown, Singapore, I can speak two Chinese dialects (Hokkien and Cantonese) and three languages (Chinese, English, and Malay). Colloquially all Singapore children in the 1960s spoken English with both Chinese and Malay phrases in almost all English sentences and we were proud of this version of English, known as Singlish. In schools under the British system, there was no need […]

Harsh Light

“The Officer who drove her home (no siren, no flashing lights) walks around the police car to open the passenger door.” Caught your attention? That was how her last published poem started. Shall I continue to complete this piece of her poetry before commenting further? You bet I will !!! “He offers his arm, escorts her along the bewildering pathway. At the porch steps, she stops, slides her arm from his, turns, sweetly confused, leans her wrinkled cheek against his uniformed chest. He steadies her, a gentle touch of elbow. She wobbles up on tip-toe, bestows a goodnight kiss below […]

The Good, Bad, Ugly

The following YouTube video has more than seven million viewers since 2014 and not a word is sung. There must be a reason why so many are so touched by just one band, one silent choir group dressed in black, and one lady singer dressed in red and not a single word is sung. I’ll tell you what? In all of my life, whenever I meet up with some difficulties or hardship, whether at home or at work, I stop talking and I turn this music on in my mind and you know what? Yes, I am at peace once […]

Teresa Carpio

I would like to introduce to you this morning a singer, a singer whom you may not have heard of. Let me start this story again. Once upon a recent time, there was this singer called Teresa Carpio 杜麗莎 (born in Hong Kong on the 30th September 1956), her father, Filipino, her mother, Shanghainese. Yes, she is still with us today, retired but still active and she lives in Hong Kong after having spent some periods in the western world. Perhaps it is best that, at this stage, I introduce some of her songs she has sung in concerts. (1) […]

The French Collection

When you are retired, and nearing seventy-nine years of age, you will find that you have time. You have time to reflect - on your past, on your achievements, and most important of all, of your failures. This is simply because your failures are the ones you want to document in order that your grandchildren and others like them can learn from. One of my failings of my past is the fact that I did not learn French - the French Language and the French Culture. Growing up in a British colonial system of Singapore, my eyes and my thoughts […]

Bad Liar - A Relationship Stress

Let us listen to the song, Imagine Dragon’s “Bad Liar” to begin our discussion on the ‘stresses in any marriage relationship’. “Bad Liar” https://youtu.be/I-QfPUz1es8 https://youtu.be/NQAYb9ok4s0 (lyrics) Let us analyze the meaning of this song, verse by verse. In the first verse, the singer expresses his experience in a difficult year when it appears to him that ‘terrors’ prey on innocent victims’ [which we can presume that the victims include him]. Listen to his emotional plead to his loved one to “trust” him. Oh, hush, my dear, it’s been a difficult year And terrors don’t prey on Innocent victims Trust me, darling, Trust me, […]

I am only human

How often do we think that we humans can control our environment. Climate change advocates want to legislate to prevent carbon emission into the atmosphere. But can we control nature? No matter how much carbon we emitted into our atmosphere, our days are warmer, sunnier, dryer and the icebergs are melting away every day. Let me tell you of my belief. Yes, we are moving closer and closer towards the sun, somehow. At the same time, somewhere else in the solar system, another planet (perhaps now going through the earth’s ice age trillions of years ago) is moving or evolving […]
