Memories of Mum

Born on Thursday 1st March 1917, Oi Kuan Lee (李爱群)was the eldest child of Kum Tong Lee (李锦堂)and Sheet Ying Pang (彭雪英). Kum Tong was working as a chef in London for six years when he received a letter from home in November 1915 asking him to return to his homeland Singapore because of his parents’ ill heath. As a filial sixth son of the family, he obediently returned in March 1916 only to find that his parents were as healthy as ever. The only reason for wanting Tong back was that they had arranged for him to marry Ying, […]

How Deep is the Ocean

Have you ever fantasized traveling downwards, deep into the ocean instead of traveling upwards into space? I have. 海洋有多深? 你有没有幻想,向下游,深入海洋,而不是向上进入太空? 我有。   Let us start with the video above and reading the first fifty seconds of the transcript below: The ocean is really really deep, deeper in fact than most of us realize. If you were to shave off all of the lands from the tops of every continent and island in the world and fill up the oceans deepest points with that land then the entire earth would be covered in an ocean two miles deep. Three-fourths of our […]

House Flip Stuns Retirees

Concluding Remarks: (placed here and repeated at end) Between July 2016 and February 2017, although the property market had somewhat flattened, properties such as this is constantly in demand. The vendors had sold at what they had considered as the correct price having obtained an independent valuation of the property before the sale. The purchasers had no intention of ‘flipping’ and their so-called ‘profit’ had in fact been clawed back by the latest legislation on capital gains. All matters appear to be totally above board and the vendors have to forget about this and move on. There are brighter things to […]

Introducing Singer-Composer Teia Drysdale Kennedy

English: Introducing Singer-Composer Teia Drysdale Kennedy Chinese: 介绍歌手作曲家 - 肯尼迪 Maori: Te whakauru Singer-Composer Teia Drysdale Kennedy Thai: แนะนำ Teia Kennedy นักร้องนักแต่งเพลง [Næanả Teia Kennedy nạk r̂xng nạk tæ̀ng phelng] Malay: Memperkenalkan Singer-Composer Teia Kennedy This is a young 18 years lady who has just graduated in music. Her singer style is not the same as those of her generation. Her melodies appeal to those who are serious thinkers and her renditions surely deserve our applause. Listen to her as she sings ‘The House of the Rising Sun’. “Quietly powerful,” I commented. “She has potentials,” her Mum added.   Take […]

The Average Man by Sir Robert Muldoon

His name is Robert Muldoon. Born in September 1921, he was the Prime Minister of New Zealand during the years 1975 to 1984. I have a lot to thank him for just because of his export incentive scheme created by him when he was the Prime Minister and Finance Minister of the country. You see, I was in Auckland in 1976 when I attended several job interviews and eventually accepted a job offer from Fletchers Construction as the Quantity Surveyor/Marketer in the newly established Overseas Division. Little did I know then that Fletchers, under Muldoon’s export incentive scheme, had applied for […]

Whakarewarewa Village is just like a Chinese Village

I have recently re-visited Whakarewarewa - the living Maori Village located at 17 Tryon Street in Rotorua. Together with my visitors from Melbourne, we walked through the Village on a guided tour. We watched the cultural performance of six Maori dancers and tasted the Hangi food at the restaurant.   The village comprises: (1) a Memorial Archway, the equivalent of a Pai Lou 牌楼(Entrance Archway) in an olden-day Chinese village. (2) Whare Tipuna the Ancestral Meeting House, the equivalent of Chi Tang 祠堂 in the Chinese village. (3) Cultural Performance Area which is equivalent to the Village Opera House in the Chinese […]
