Snells Beach, Kawau Bay

It is summer here in Snells Beach, Auckland, January 11th (Wednesday) to 14th (Saturday) 2023. This particular summer is totally unlike the summers in previous years. Normally, at this time of the year, Auckland is hot, a little humid, with a temperature of around 26 degrees centigrade. This year, is it windy, with occasional rains, some times, for short periods, like a tropical rain. Such weather is in and around Snells Beach. Elsewhere, particularly in the holiday spots of the Coromandel Peninsular, in the north eastern part of North Island, there are reports of wild winds and even rainstorms and flooding, especially around the areas closer to Gisborne, some seven and a half hours drive to the south east of Snells Beach.

For us, six, Will’s family of four and we the two grandparents, are lucky to get the milder side of the ‘storm’, with only the mid-to-high winds and occasional rain to contend with. We spent two nights at Salty Dog Inn and the last night at Snells Beach Motel, both located along Mahurangi East Road.

The Snells Beach Motel, opposite the shopping mall and Warehouse, where we stay for just one night on Friday 13th January.

For the two of us, grandparents, at our age of over eighties, we limit our activities to a tour of the Brick Bay Wines and Sculpture Trail (on the afternoon of Thursday 12th January) and the boat mail trip to Kawau Island with lunch (on the morning of Friday 13th January). The first day, 11th January, our planned activity was rained out. We did have a good Cantonese meal at the local Al’s Roast and Qiaos Chinese takeaway in the evening. Dinner on Thursday 12th January was at Bam Boo Asian Canteen Restaurant along Mahurangi River Wharf, Warkworth. For lunch on Friday 13th January 2023, we had roast beef and salmon at the Mansion House, Kawau Island as part of the Kawau Island boat cruise. Our evening dinner was again at Qiao’s.

At Al’s Roast and Qiao’s we had the seafood soup ($19.00) and the roasts - pork on one occasion and beef in another ($16.00 each) plus gravy ($2.50). At Bam Boo, we had the Green Rice Prawns ($22.00), Mongolian Shaking Beef ($29.00) and Lamb Shank Masala ($36.00).

We walked the Snells Beach to find the most beautiful sea shells that are washed up by the tides. This search game is for a period of half an hour. There were six of us, Keiden (2), Blake (5), their parents and their grandparents in the search.

The Brick Bay Vineyard together with its Sculpture Trail is located at 17 Arabella Lane, Snells Beach, just 1.4 km (5 minutes by car) away from Salty Dog Inn where we were staying. The Vineyard and sculpture displays are carefully planned in such a way that the vineyards are situated to the north and west sides of the entire land size and the displays are blended with the natural surrounds on the south and east sides of the property. The landscape has been gradually evolved over the past thirty years with the planting of the vineyards, the olive groves, the creation of lakes and the regeneration of native bush. The pathways of the trail are designed as easy walkways that meander past water-lily lakes, small hillside vineyards and farmland with sheep and lamb grazing. https://youtu.be/Pa5K8k7x_dU The entire sculpture trail is a 2 km walk that can be extended to 3 km if all the looped walkways are to be included.

“It took us 14 years to discover this gem, but we are glad we have now. The setting is divine and being a sunny day really highlighted the Lily pond and the glass house as a great venue for a casual lunch. Considering the shortage of hospitality staff the crew did a great job, we loved the wine, olive oil and honey tasting in “The Row” such a lovely area to really appreciate the produce. We stuck to ordering small plates which were very generous in their size. The Rillettes had a nice texture and the pickled egg was a lovely touch. Our bruschetta were the size of saucers and very flavoursome, we paired the asparagus with the beef cheek and were more than pleased with our choices. Just had room to fit in the trio of bon bons from Honest chocolate in matakana. Loved being able to sit and watch the ducks and bird life as we ate and chatted. Had a lovely relaxing experience and enjoyed the venue and the staff were great.”
