Liza Wang, Cantonese Singer

汪明荃 is a famous Cantonpop singer, Cantonese opera singer, film star, TV host, and (for a brief period) a politician from Hong Kong. Born in 1947, she is now on the Academy Board of Hong Kong Poly University and recently (posted in YouTube on 22nd December 2022) she had performed at the University 85th Anniversary. At the age of 75, she still can sing two of the many favourite songs for the University staff and students.

汪明荃是著名的粤语歌手、粤剧歌手、电影明星、电视节目主持人，以及（短暂的）香港政治家。她出生于 1947 年，现为香港理工大学学院董事会成员，最近（于 2022 年 12 月 22 日在 YouTube 上发布）她曾在大学 85 周年庆典上表演。在 75 岁高龄时，她仍能为大学教职工和学生唱出许多最喜欢的歌曲中的两首。

She was born in Shanghai on August 28th 1947. At the age of nine, she moved to Hong Kong with her parents and two other siblings - an elder sister and a younger brother. After graduating from High School, she started working in a white collar office job but soon she became bored and applied to attend an acting course at the Rediffusion Hong Kong’s first Artist Academy class in 1967. From thousands of applicants, the 20-year-old Liza was one of the nine that were picked to attend the acting course and after graduating from the course she worked for Rediffusion Television Limited from 1967 to 1971. She then joined TVB and made her mark in the entertainment industry in various epic drama series, including the following titles that captured the mood of many hearts in Hong Kong’s cantonese speaking population:

In the politics of Hong Kong, Liza Wang was selected as a delegate in the National People’s Congress in the Republic of China from the year 1988 right through the year 1997. At the present moment she still holds a place in the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference. During the Beijing Olympics in the year 2008, Liza stood up to unite the opposing Democrats and the Pro-Beijing side of Hong Kong’s political circle and the Democrats were allowed to enter China for the Olympics events.

在香港政坛，汪明荃从1988年到1997年被选为中华民国全国人民代表大会代表。目前她仍然在中国人民政治协商会议中占有一席之地. 2008年北京奥运期间，汪明荃站出来团结香港政坛对立的民主派和亲北京派，让民主派进入中国参加奥运项目。

Liza is also known for her social work for the improvement of living standards of the lives of many rural areas of China. She hosted television’s fund raising programmes like the telethons for charities like the Tung Wah Group of free Hospitals. As a two-time cancer survivor, she volunteered to be an executive committee member of the Hong Kong Anti-Cancer Society.

汪明荃 也因其为改善中国许多农村地区的生活水平而开展的社会工作而闻名。她主持了电视筹款节目，例如为东华免费医院等慈善机构举办的电视节目。作为两次癌症幸存者，她自愿成为香港防癌会的执行委员会成员。
