(1) Google “Wordle”. (2) The screen shown above appears with the alphabet key board below the six rows of five cells. (3) We are required to guess at the five-lettered word stored in the computer memory. (4) We need to get the solution within six attempts - each row represents one attempt. (5) After entry of a word, the computer will show us the letter coloured (a) BLACK, representing that the letter is not in the solution; or (b) YELLOW, meaning the letter is in the solution but in another position; or (c) GREEN, meaning the letter is correct and in the correct position.

For today, 1st February 2023, our first guess is the word LOUIE, meaning ‘A famous warrior’. We need to start with a five-letter word with four of the five vowels. LOUIE is one such word. Others include AUDIO, ADIEU, and MIAOU. Other less common words with this requirement include: AULOI, AUREI, OUIJA, and OURIE.

We then test whether the missing vowel ‘ A ‘ is in the solution by having a word with vowel ‘ A ‘ plus the two letters ‘ L ‘ and ‘ O ‘. This word we use is: ALONG. The result is that the vowel ‘ A ‘ is not in the solution; vowel ‘ O ‘ is now green (correct); the consonant ‘ L ‘ is still yellow; and the letters ‘ N ‘ and ‘ G ‘ are not in the solution.

Our third attempt is: DROLL. Letters ‘ O ‘ and one of the ‘ L ‘s are greens. Another letter ‘ D ‘ appears as yellow. Letters ‘ R ‘ and the second ‘ L ‘ are not in the solution.

Our fourth attempt is the word: SCOLD, which is correct - all greens.

1st Word: MIAOU. Letter ‘ I ‘ is yellow. 2nd Word: PRICE. (Test for vowel ‘ E ‘, and found that ‘ E ‘ not in solution.) Vowel ‘ I ‘ is green. Letter ‘ R ‘ is yellow. 3rd Word: SWIRL. Three letters are green now - ‘ S ‘ , ‘ I ‘, and ‘ R ‘. 4th Word: SHIRK. All greens, correct word.
