First attempt: 9 * 3 + 1 = 2 8. This format is our normal starting guess - three signs arranged such that the multiplication ( * ) is in the second position, the addition ( + ) is in the fourth position, and the sixth position. The five digits have to be different so as to eliminate possibilities for further attempts. Here, all the signs are correct; digits ( 3 ) and ( 9) are also correct; digits ( 1 ) and ( 2 ) are purples - right digits but in wrong positions.

Second attempt: The two signs to the left of the equal sign have to be interchanged. 9 + 3 * 2 can easily be guessed and the digit ( 1 ) has to be in position seven, leaving the eighth position as the answer to the equation, digit ( 5 ). So:

9 + 3 * 2 = 1 5 is the right solution - all greens.
