This is a movie that had its world premiere on 8th September 2019 at the forty-fourth Toronto International Film Festival. It was considered to be one of ten best films of that year and had received an Oscar’s Best Adapted Screenplay Award for the year 2020. The comedy drama movie was nominated for five other awards including the ‘Best Picture Award’ (Carthew Neal - producer, Taika Waititi - New Zealand film maker and actor, and Chelsea Winstanley - New Zealand film producer) during the same Oscar year. It was also nominated for the ‘Best Supporting Actress Award’ (Scarlett Johansson).

The setting of this movie story is in the last days of Adolf Hitler’s Germany, in a fictional city of Falkenheim where a timid ten-year-old schoolboy named Johannes (nicknamed JoJo) Betzler was forced into joining the Youth Army. Like the youths of his time, he was indoctrinated to be pro-Nazi, burning out all books, fighting imaginary enemies and worshipping their leader, Adolf Hitler. His nickname JoJo was given to him by his training camp Captain, Captain Klenzendorf, and his classmates when he refused to kill a rabbit. He had an imaginary friend in “Adolf Hitler” who encouraged him to return to his classmates while still in training just to prove himself as the brave one by throwing a life stick hand grenade all by himself. The result of this experiment left him scarred in his face and limping on his left foot.

His mother, Rosie Betzier, insisted to the demoted Klenzendorf that Jojo should still be included in the training team , and be given smaller tasks during his recovering period, like spreading of promotional leaflets and collecting iron scape metals.

One evening JoJo discovered that his mother had kept a Jewish girl (named Elsa Korr who was a classmate of his late sister, Inge) in hiding from the Nazis in Inge’s attic bedroom, behind the wardrobe. JoJo was terrified and consulted his imagery friend, Hitler, as to what he should do next.

“If you declare to the authorities that you are hiding a Jew, you, your mother, and the Jewish girl will be executed and the dead bodies hanged at the City Square for all to see,” said the imaginary Adolf to JoJo.

“What then shall I do?” asked JoJo.

“If I were you,” answered Hitler, “I would continue to befriend this girl and asked her on the whereabouts of her Jewish family members andJewish friends, and with this information, you could become an hero by turning all of the Jewish clan in to authorities, Heil Hitler.”

“Heil Hitler!” JoJo made that Nazi salute and he therefore continued to interact with Elsa to uncover her “Jew secrets” and he made a picture book recording of his findings, giving his drawings a title of “Yoohoo Jew“. His aim was to “expose” the habits of the Jewish people, so that the public could easily recognise the Jewish kind.

The boys in Nazi-occupied Germany had to enlist themselves to training camps where they were trained as fighters to kill all their enemies, especially the Jews.

During conversations with Elsa, JoJo started forming a friendship with Elsa and slowly he became infatuated with the caring and engaging Elsa. He then forged love letters to Elsa, pretending to be from Elsa’s boyfriend Nathan and he started to question his beliefs, causing his imaginary Hitler to scold him over his diminished patriotism.

Gradually, Rosie was revealed to be part of a movement against Nazism and among her tasks was the spreading of anti-Nazi messages around town. JoJo also found out that his mother was also a member of such a movement although, on the surface, Rosie Betzier, had appeared to be pro-Hitler.

One afternoon while Rosie was out, the secret State Police of Nazi Germany (called the Gestapo) came to JoJo’s house to investigate. During the search by the five Gestapo officials, Captain Klenzendorf arrived and he helped Jojo and Elsa deceive the Gestapo officials regarding Elsa’s identity. Later, however, Jojo found his mother’s dead body hanged in the public square. Devastated, he returned home and tried to stab Elsa (blaming her to be the cause of his mother’s death) before he broke down in tears. Elsa comforted him and she revealed that JoJo’s lost father had been working against Hitler from abroad. JoJo’s beliefs on Nazism quickly shifted, and he started seeing the regime’s inhumanity side. With no money, the pair of them (JoJo and Elsa) started to scavenge food from waste bins around the city.

Adolf Hitler eventually committed sucide. The Western allies won the war. JoJo and Elsa were now free.
