Kempton Bunton is a man with principles and righteousness more than he cares for himself. This self-educated working class person, in his early sixties, had been sacked from his job as a taxi driver just because he was giving free ride to impoverished and disabled war veterans. That shows what a man he was.

He was also sacked from a bakery factory when he paid too much attention on workers’ welfare than on his work in the bread packaging production line. He did however won the respect and affection of his fellow workers but that did not bring home the money that his wife Dorothy needed to run the family home.

Kempton also refused to pay for the BBC TV licence fee and, together with his son, Jackie, he organised campaigns against pensioners having to pay for this. This was one of his wider strong beliefs about the Government and the big businesses ought to be supporting the common man. He was jailed for thirteen days for watching the BBC without a licence.

His only daughter, Marion, died a few years ago in a bicycle accident and there appeared to be an misunderstanding between Kempton and his wife Dorothy over this mishaps. His eldest son Kenny lived in Leeds, some miles away from him, and he was working in construction.

Dorothy, Kempton’s wife, worked as a housekeeper and a babysitter for a local councillor. She was always opposed to Kempton caring for others much more than he cared for his family members.

One day, a famous painting of the portrait of the Duke of Wellington by Goya was stolen from the National Gallery in London. Kempton did not steal it but that theft was carried out on the very day he was in London to seek funding for his campaign against the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC). His son Jackie was in London too, helping him in his campaign. When they returned home at Newcastle, Kempton realised that the Goya’s painting was stolen by Jackie. They hid the painting in the wardrobe. Kempton then sent a series of ransom notes to the Government departments, saying that he would return the painting on the condition that the elderly be exempted from paying the TV Licence.

In the meantime, before Kempton’s ransom notes were sent out, the Police had offered a reward of Five Thousand Pounds for the recovery of the painting.

Another day, Pammy, the wife of Kempton’s elder son Kenny discovered the painting in the wardrobe. The next day, Kempton, in panic, walked into the National Gallery and return the painting to Gallery and confessed to the theft.

At the Court, Kempton was charged with the theft. Although the case appeared hopeless, Kempton’s barrister Jeremy defended him on the grounds that he had no intention of depriving the Gallery of the painting, but instead was simply borrowing it to further his campaign.

Back in Newcastle during the early stages of the trial, Jackie revealed to his mother that it had in fact been him who stole the painting for his father to use in his campaign, with his father covering up for him and taking the blame. The jury acquitted Kempton of all charges except for the theft of the eighty pounds picture frame, which Jackie had removed from the painting at his London lodgings and then lost.

After his three-month sentence, Kempton and Dorothy forgave each other over how they had mishandled their grief at Marion’s death.

Four years later Jackie admitted his guilt to the Police, but the Police feared that a new trial could lead to Kempton being called as a witness and again becoming an embarrassment to the Government. The Police therefore agreed that if Jackie did not go public they would not prosecute.
