Synopsis:

Psychology plays an important role in the solving of crimes. A psychologist has to put himself in a criminal’s mind to anticipate what that criminal’s next move would be. The story of ‘Visible Lie’ is based on a web-based mystery novel, Arcane Cases, that won the third web literature competition in the mystery genre. The plot focuses on a group of four criminal psychologists working together for the Yiqing City’s Public Security Bureau (Special Police Unit). The unit uses criminal psychology and intelligent criminal investigation methods to solve complicated criminal cases. Xu Lang, the protagonist, detects the motives of a criminal by studying his or her facial expressions and body languages. When he and his team face one odd case after another, they become stronger and are more unified. They look into the minds of criminals and find out their motivations using their technical experience, and try to anticipate the criminals’ next steps, assisting the unit in cracking some of the hardest cases the Bureau encounters.

罪案心理小组X中徐朗（张超饰）与丁嘉琪（米露饰）总是一言不合就开怼，唐森（李晨浩饰）和谢磊（王润泽饰）则充当了偶尔吐槽的围观群众。随着罪案心理小组发现在案发现场的曼陀罗花进一步揭示了“鬼屋诅咒案”“连环杀人案”等案件背后的关联，“犯罪分子背后一定有幕后推手，在把他们引导向犯罪道路”。随着7年前与徐朗相关的一起案件—“曼陀罗连环杀人案”进入了众人视线，案情也变得愈发复杂.

Xu Lang (played by actor Zhang Chao) obtained his doctoral PhD degree in criminal psychology from the University of Maryland. Upon his return to China, he joined the public security bureau and had an injury through an accident that forced him to recuperate for a good twelve months. While solving another case, he lost his younger brother. How did this happen? Watch the story to find out the why and the how.

Seven years later, Xu Lang lectured at the National Police University being the youngest professor of Criminology. His friend, Tang Sen (played by actor Leon Lee) invited him to return to the field to help out their newly established “Criminal Psychology Team X”. Together, the two (Xu Lang and Tang Sen) plus another two (Ding Jiaqi and Jie Lei) became members of Team X and this team uncovered many unsolved cases. For instance, the team discovered the mandala flower at many crime scenes, revealing the connection behind the “curse of the haunted house” and the “serial murder cases”. The team also found new clues in Xu Lang’s life-changing case from seven years ago.

Episode 1: “Human Lie Detector” Xu Lang was invited by his friend Tang Sen to join the newly established criminal psychology team of Yiqing Public Security Bureau. Ding Jiaqi, a team member who was sent to pick up Xu Lang, not only missed out, but also arrived at the scene of the crime later than Xu Lang, so Xu Lang was not impressed. 第1集　　“人体测谎机”徐朗受到好友唐森的邀请加入宜庆市公安局新成立的犯罪心理小组。被派去接徐朗的小组成员丁嘉琪不仅扑了个空，还比徐朗迟到案发现场，丁嘉琪也因此跟徐朗结下梁子。

Episode 2: A strange man injured Xu Lang and ran away. Xu Lang was convinced that there must be other secrets in the bar he visited where he was injured. He took the bar owner back to the Bureau for questioning. Through his understanding of the expressions of the owner, he was able to extract from the owner, the location of a secret room where illegal drugs were hidden. 第2集 　陌生男子将徐朗打伤后逃跑。徐朗确信酒吧里一定还有其他秘密，于是将酒吧老板带回，通过他的微表情找到了藏毒品的密室，警方在密室中发现了廖成吉的血迹，确认此处为案发现场。

Episode 3: The team members celebrated the successful detection of the Liao Chengji’s case. Two girls who just joined the Bureau wanted to play the game of “Truth or Dare”, but Ding Jiaqi said that she did not want to play as she just wanted to hear people telling the truth. At this time, Xu Lang was investigated another criminal case and discovered that the suspect, Chen Kang, was a scumbag regardless living off the earnings of others who were involved in illegal activities. 第3集　小组成员一起庆祝案件成功侦破。刚加入的两位女孩想玩真心话大冒险游戏，丁嘉琪表示自己只想听人们说真话。这时候的徐朗不分场合地讲出陈康是渣男地真相，丁嘉琪伤心地离开了，徐朗本是好意，也许觉得这样会让丁嘉琪更加冷静，还是习惯了和丁嘉琪争辩地说话方式，毫不留情地打击了丁嘉琪。

Episode 4: Xu Lang questioned Jiaqi’s reasoning ability when Tang Sen asked Jiaqi to express her thoughts on a case under review. Ding Jiaqi talked eloquently to defend her logical analysis. “Lu Shaofu thought that the girl had indirectly killed her mother, as the uniform she was wearing that day had bloodstains on it.” The group members finally agreed on the view of Jiaqi and applauded her. 第4集　徐朗一直质疑嘉琪的推理能力，唐森让嘉琪说出自己心里的想法。于是丁嘉琪侃侃而谈，卢少夫认为是那女孩间接害死她母亲的，当天就穿着制服，所以最后要杀的人就是她。小组成员鼓起掌来，丁嘉琪终于扬眉吐气了开心极了。

Episode 5: Huang Cheng sat in the interrogation room and waited anxiously for his interrogation. Xu Lang and Ding Jiaqi were in another adjacent room that had one-directional mirror on the wall. Xu Lang closely observed Huang Cheng’s nervously pinching his own fingers over and over. He waited patiently, while Ding Jiaqi was a little anxious. 第5集　黄成坐在审问间非常焦急的等待着审问。徐朗和丁嘉琪在另一个房间里面，徐教授密切的观察到黄成的手指捏在一起，耐心地等待着，一旁地丁嘉琪有些着急。黄成陈述余蓉夫妇招待自己与妻子，余蓉不舒服回房间休息，天亮后才发现自己遭侵犯。徐朗揉了揉眼睛，即使有些微表情但是没有特别的发现。

Opinion of one reviewer:
This drama story is enjoyable to watch, with great team interactions and great acting by the four main characters. The drama however falls short of my expectation in some instances where the plots do not reflect reality. The last three episodes especially are disappointing, when the Xu Lang loses his cool, making Jiaqi a typical damsel in distress.

The investigation/psychology team is competent, and the team members do bond together well. Xu Lang - usually referred to as the ‘Professor’, is a surprisingly funny person who strays away from the typically happy mood when he finds some flaws in the faces of villains. He can be playful at times, talkative at times, and is frank about his own brilliance when he reads the micro-expressions and body languages correctly. He can be someone whom people may find it hard to be close to because of his directness and bluntness in expressions and prefers to speak the truth, at times hurting someone’s feelings.

Ding Jia Qi is an officer who pretends to be the ‘rookie’ of the team of four. She is basically assigned as the assistant to Xu Lang. Her strength is in her ‘kung-fu’ fist fights, but unfortunately we do not get to see very much of these actions. It takes a few episodes before we can understand her as she started as a rebellious member of the team with a strong temperament. It is however through her her questioning of the many “why’s” and “dumb questions” that we understand the strength of the other three team members and each of these explain their actions to her. to dumb things down and explain everything.

Tang Sen is the leader of the team. He has a cool head and is often calm and collected in his thoughts and actions. He is also superbly smart. He specialises in criminal profiling and gathered the team together once he knows what the best method should be in cornering the villains.

The main villain sets up traps for the team members to walk into and made them look silly at times. In fact, this part of the story does have a lesson for all of us - Pride comes before a Fall. Eventually of course the villain was captured but that takes the best wits of all of the four members of the team.
