Leisure, Joy and Pleasure

The poet William Henry Davies was born in Newport, Wales. He was born in the year 1871, 3rd of July, and died on the 26th September 1940. He was the son of an owner of a Pub (beer drinking place where people socialise) and Pub owners are called publicans. He was trained as a picture frame maker. He had travelled to America and then to Canada where he had an accident and lost a foot. He returned to England later and led a life of a tramp. Yet, he became one of the best poets of his time. He was married to Emma in 1923, a lady who was much younger than him. His first poems were published when he was 34. Most of his poetry is on the subject of nature or life on the road and exhibits a natural simple, earthy style. We publish five of his poems below to illustrate his simpleness in style and the meaningful use of words.

Poet: W. H. DAVIES Poem: Leisure. https://youtu.be/xNu8eQB7Euk
WHAT is this life if, full of care,
We have no time to stand and stare?—
No time to stand beneath the boughs,
And stare as long as sheep and cows:
No time to see, when woods we pass,
Where squirrels hide their nuts in grass:
No time to see, in broad daylight,
Streams full of stars, like skies at night:
No time to turn at Beauty’s glance,
And watch her feet, how they can dance:
No time to wait till her mouth can
Enrich that smile her eyes began?
A poor life this if, full of care,
We have no time to stand and stare.

Poet: W. H. DAVIES Poem: Joy and Pleasure https://youtu.be/Zzzeh3q_r_o
Now, joy is born of parents poor,
And pleasure of our richer kind;
Though pleasure’s free, she cannot sing
As sweet a song as joy confined.
Pleasure’s a Moth, that sleeps by day
And dances by false glare at night;
But Joy’s a Butterfly, that loves
To spread its wings in Nature’s light.
Joy’s like a Bee that gently sucks
Away on blossoms its sweet hour;
But pleasure’s like a greedy Wasp,
That plums and cherries would devour.
Joy’s like a Lark that lives alone,
Whose ties are very strong, though few;
But Pleasure like a Cuckoo roams,
Makes much acquaintance, no friends true.
花开时是甜蜜的时光;
他们的联系很牢固,虽然很少;
如果其他人听到,则毫不在意;
Joy from her heart doth sing at home,
With little care if others hear;
But pleasure then is cold and dumb,
And sings and laughs with strangers near.
Poet: W. H. DAVIES Poem: The Rain. https://youtu.be/kenVv5McQAo

I hear leaves drinking rain;
I hear rich leaves on top
Giving the poor beneath
Drop after drop;
’Tis a sweet noise to hear
These green leaves drinking near.
每一个黑色、圆形的水滴;
我希望阳光灿烂;
'T将是一个可爱的景象。
And when the Sun comes out,
After this Rain shall stop,
A wondrous Light will fill
Each dark, round drop;
I hope the Sun shines bright;
’Twill be a lovely sight.

Poet: W. H. DAVIES Poem: Money, O! https://youtu.be/cQoMpV5f6zQ
When I had money, money, O!
I knew no joy till I went poor;
For many a false man as a friend
Came knocking all day at my door.
Then felt I like a child that holds
A trumpet that he must not blow
Because a man is dead; I dared
Not speak to let this false world know.
Much have I thought of life, and seen
How poor men’s hearts are ever light;
And how their wives do hum like bees
About their work from morn till night.
可怜人的心何等光明;
So, when I hear these poor ones laugh,
And see the rich ones coldly frown
Poor men, think I, need not go up
So much as rich men should come down.
When I had money, money, O!
My many friends proved all untrue;
But now I have no money, O!
My friends are real, though very few.

Poet: W. H. DAVIES Poem: A Plain Life https://youtu.be/G61boPzLuUQ
No idle gold — since this fine sun, my friend,
Is no mean miser, but doth freely spend.
No precious stones — since these green mornings show,
Without a charge, their pearls where’er I go.
No lifeless books — since birds with their sweet tongues
Will read aloud to me their happier songs.
No painted scenes — since clouds can change their skies
A hundred times a day to please my eyes.
No headstrong wine — since, when I drink, the spring
Into my eager ears will softly sing.
No surplus clothes — since every simple beast
Can teach me to be happy with the least.
