Have you ever fantasized traveling downwards, deep into the ocean instead of traveling upwards into space?
I have.
Let us start with the video above and reading the first fifty seconds of the transcript below:
The ocean is really really deep, deeper in fact than most of us realize. If you were to shave off all of the lands from the tops of every continent and island in the world and fill up the oceans deepest points with that land then the entire earth would be covered in an ocean two miles deep. Three-fourths of our planet is already covered in water though and it goes a lot deeper than just two miles.
Let us start with a sense of scale. This dot right here is the size of an average human. The slightly larger dot is the size of an elephant, and this is the size of the largest ship ever built, the Knock Nevis. With that in mind, let us start going underwater and see what we find out.
The first milestone is that 40 meters below the surface which is the maximum depth allowed for recreational scuba diving. A little further down at 93 meters is where the wreck of the Lusitania was discovered which is interesting because the Lusitania itself is 240 meters long, which means that it was sunk in waters shallower than it is long. So if the ship was standing on its stern or bow it would be sticking out of the water just slightly deeper than that at 100 meters where diving can become seriously fatal if you were not careful because of decompression sickness.

So, let us begin our fantasy.
Let us say that we could build a big, big submarine and travel into the deep, deep ocean. Of course, we would be bringing our family members. There were two of us, then our parents (four more people), our brothers and their partners (four more) and our sisters (another four more) - a total of fourteen of us.
Let’s say we traveled to a depth of 1,000 meters - to the scary zone.
Now stop and think a while. Start answering some of these questions:
现在停下来想一会儿。 开始回答以下一些问题:
(1) How long will we be staying in the submarine at this depth?
(2) How long can the supply of our food last?
(3) How can we explore the ocean at this depth, considering that the water pressure at this depth is totally unbearable?
(4) Have we the technique to resurface back on earth? I suppose we do have this technique and thus I end this article here just for all of us to contemplate on the fact that the world is much larger than we can ever imagine.
Living on the Ocean Floor - footage recorded by Vincent Zintzen, Te Papa Fish Team, Natural Environment.
Film recorded using a baited Lander in various locations and depths around NZ.
The video unit lights up the dark world of the deep sea. Food is scarce so the animals that live in the depths are attracted to the bait. The camera reveals the interesting behaviour of these creatures as they strive to survive in their extreme environment
The footage of the seal shark attacking the hagfish, and getting a mouthful of slime for his troubles, is a good example of the knowledge gained through this difficult and exacting research.
