Careless Whisper 粗心耳语 Cūxīn ěryǔ
Listen to George Mitchael rendition of the song on YouTube first and then go through the lyrics of the song following that: https://youtu.be/izGwDsrQ1eQ
I feel so unsure
As I take your hand and lead you to the dance floor
As the music dies, something in your eyes
Calls to mind the silver screen
And all its sad good-byes
I’m never gonna dance again
Guilty feet have got no rhythm
Though it’s easy to pretend
I know you’re not a fool
Should’ve known better than to cheat a friend
And waste the chance that I’d been given
So I’m never gonna dance again
The way I danced with you
Time can never mend
Careless whispers of a good friend
To the heart and mind
Ignorance is kind
There’s no comfort in the truth
Pain is all you’ll find
I’m never gonna dance again
Guilty feet have got no rhythm
Though it’s easy to pretend
I know you’re not a fool.
Should’ve known better than to cheat a friend
And waste the chance that I’d been given
So I’m never gonna dance again
The way I danced with you…
Never without your love,
Tonight the music seems so loud
I wish that we could lose this crowd
Maybe it’s better this way
We’d hurt each other with the things we’d want to say
We could have been so good together
We could have lived this dance forever
But no one’s gonna dance with me
Please stay
And I’m never gonna dance again
Guilty feet have got no rhythm
Though it’s easy to pretend
I know you’re not a fool
Should’ve known better than to cheat a friend
And waste the chance that I’d been given
So I’m never gonna dance again
The way I danced with you
Now that you’re gone
(Now that you’re gone) What I did’s so wrong, so wrong
That you had to leave me alone.
What memory does this song remind you of?
Now that we, in New Zealand, are in a lockdown situation, we have time to reflect. We have time to think and we have time to do the things that you have always deferred doing.
I am sharing this song with you because I have, in my past, offended friends that I now regretted. In my past, I have gone against the wishes of my parents and I am now living my regrets.
When I traveled alone to study in London on a Government scholarship in 1962, the loneliness hurt me and hurt me deeply. I left my newly wedded wife behind in Singapore and unbeknown to me, she was carrying my firstborn with her. Had I stayed behind for her and the family, I would not have been qualified as a Chartered Surveyor and my career path would have been totally different.
‘Careless Whisper’ was released in 1984 when I had already migrated to Auckland, New Zealand, with my family members. But the impact of the song to me was great. I had played this music in my mind over and over many times since. The music without the lyrics is even more dramatic to me. Listen on to the following music version of the song.

A well written and touching story. May I suggest the phrasing is not quite correct here…” In my past, I have gone against the wishes of my parents that I am now living my regrets.” This is correct…” In my past, I have gone against the wishes of my parents and I am now living my regrets”. Here…”…Government scholarship in the year 1962…
“the year” is superfluous, making it sound overly historical.
Thanks to you, David. Yes, my English needs to be corrected as I grow up in Singapore where Singlish (a mixture of English, Chinese, and Malay) is the norm, even to this day. I shall arrange to amend the article accordingly. Thanks a lot for your interest in my website. Warm regards in these troubled times.
