We started with the usual equation of five different digits linked in with the equal sign in the sixth position and the multiplication and addition signs sitting in either of the second or the fourth positions. The equation is 2 + 4 * 9 = 3 8.

The result is that the equal sign is correct, at the sixth position and there is no multiplication in the solution. The addition sign is in the wrong position. The digit 9 is correct.

Our second equation is aimed to see if the addition sign is in the third position with the equation 5 6 + 1 9 = 7 5. The addition sign is still in the wrong position. The only position that is possible for this sign is the fourth position. Another sign, perhaps the deduction sign must be placed in the second position. With the ( * ) sign not in the solution, the answer to any equation cannot exceed 20, so position seven must be the digit 1.

We forget to retain digit 3 and the multiplication sign ( * ) in our second attempt. With four cells colored green (meaning correct) we can quite easily get the solution by placing digit 3 in the second position, the deduction sign in the third position, and the multiplication sign in the fifth position.
