The first clues are 10 = A and 13 = C. The word in Cell f3 across has to be found first. This eight lettered word is formatted thus: 9; A; C; 9; 12; C; A; 8.

The only word that fits these criteria is TACTICAL. So, 9 = T; 10 = A; 13 = C; 12 = I; and 8 = L. Replace all known letters into the relevant cells we have:

The next word is LICE, Cell k1 down, can you see this replacement of 4 to E? Then the word in Cell i1 across must be DELTA, (7 = D) and the word for Cell u1 down is DITTO, making 2 = O.

At this point, it is fairly easy to picture in our mind’s eyes the word HELMET in Cell h7 across. With 5 = H and 3 = M, we can figure out the Cell m1 downwards must be AILMENT, or 15 = N.

What’s next? Obviously, 6 = W as in WEALTH in Cell g1 downwards. Then SOMEHOW follows, 1 being S. Cell a1 down becomes SUSHI, 11 = U.

The words SUDS (Cell a3 across) and ENSUE (Cell a13 across) come as bonus words as a result.

The next three letters to be uncovered are: F, G, and X in MODIFY (Cell c1 downwards), INFLICTION (Cell a5 across), SLEIGH (Cell a7 across), and EXULTING (Cell a11 across).

Cell j11 across is WIS(20). The number 20 cannot be H, and cannot be E. It can only be WISP, with 20 being P.

We now can see three other words emerging: IMMOBILE (Cell k6 downwards); MITRE (Cell e9 downwards); and SUPER (Cell m9 downwards).

For Cell g13 - LI (18)UEUR - the word is clearly LIQUEUR, WITH 18 = Q. This give is SQUEEZE in Cell a7 downwards, with 26 = Z. We are now approaching the end of this puzzle. There are only five alphabets left - J, K, V, and Y. It is fairly easy now to conclude that 22 = J for JUGS (Cell c10 downwards); 19 = K for KERNEL (Cell g8 downwards); and the word ENVY with 21 = V and 23 = Y, giving us the bonus word of IMPERVIOUS.
