Mr. Kwok Fei Yang

Memory of a lost friend.
His name in his passport is Kwok Fei Young. Surname Yang. But, his real surname is Kwok.
He swam across the coastline from China’s Guangzhou to Hong Kong when he was a teenager. His life is an interesting one full of twists and turns.

Upon arrival to Hong Kong he was taken into a motor workshop where he was trained as a motor mechanic. Those were the days before formalised apprenticeships and examination trade certificates.
He had very little education. He self-taught himself the reading and writing of Chinese words and a smattering of Mandarin language besides his spoken Cantonese.
He had run successful motor mechanical workshops and later motor vehicles saleyards in Hong Kong and in China’s Foshan City, Guangzhou.

He migrated to New Zealand in the early 1990s and he was known as the first Kiwi who had started importing second hand cars from Japan into Auckland, because of his connections in Japan. He had once told me that the law in Japan then was write off cars that are more than ten years old. And because Japanese seldom travel much in cars (preferring to us public transportation) those written-off cars were often of low mileage travelled.

During the mid 2000’s he returned to Hong Kong and only lately (2019) he settled back in Auckland’s eastern suburb of Botany.
He left behind three sons and two daughters. For his funeral service however there were only five of us - his wife, one son, one daughter and then Lin and I, his friends.
May he Rest In Peace.

Finally, we would like to have a song to be dedicated to Mr. Kwok. “I’ll have to say I love you in a song”, by Jim Croce.

Well, I know it’s kind of late, I hope I didn’t wake you. But what I got to say can’t wait, I know you’d understand.
Every time I tried to tell you, The words just came out wrong. So I’ll have to say I love you in a song.
Yeah, I know it’s kind of strange, Every time I’m near you. I just run out of things to say, I know you’d understand.
Every time I tried to tell you, The words just came out wrong. So I’ll have to say I love you in a song.
Every time the time was right, All the words just came out wrong. So I’ll have to say I love you in a song.
Yeah, I know it’s kind of late, I hope I didn’t wake you. But there’s something that I just got to say, I know you’d understand.
Every time I tried to tell you, The words just came out wrong. So I”ll have to say I love you in a song.
