Kupu Whararite - Maori Similes & Metaphors
Maori Similes and Metaphors.
It has become evident following the last election in New Zealand, that the Maori Language and culture will soon become very important for the unity of the many races in New Zealand. There is now a record number of Moari Ministers in the Cabinet of the present Government. A Maori Member of Parliament, Hon. Nanaia Mahuta, a Maori lady with her moko on her chin, was sworn in as the new Foreign Minister. She will attract a lot of attention all around the world and this will heighten the fact that the Maori language and culture have now been considered a symbol of New Zealand.

The New Zealand Government’s aim is to have the Maori Language taught in all schools in the near future. This makes sense. The Maori race is the original inhabitants of New Zealand and every other race are migrants to the land. Mastering the Maori Language and learning the Maori culture can definitely make New Zealanders unique, just as the Maori Haka (the ceremonial dance of the All Blacks in rugby games) has made New Zealand noticed the world over.

Te ahiahi marie, toku kaiako me oku hoa o tenei whanau,
Good afternoon, my teacher and my family friends,
# 1. For the past six days, I have carried out a lot of research on the subject of Maori similes and metaphors.
# 1. Mo nga ra e ono kua hipa, he maha nga rangahau i mahia e au mo te whakatauki me nga kupu whakarite a te Maori.
# 2. I now know that ‘kupu’ means ‘word’ and that ‘whakarite’ stands for an ‘arrangement’.
# 2. Kei te mohio au inaianei ko te ‘kupu’ te tikanga o te ‘word’ a ko te ‘whakarite’ he tohu mo te ‘arrangement’.
# 3. And I also find out that ‘kupu whakarite’ is a form of kiwaha where ‘ki’ = say; ‘waha’ = mouth.
# 3. Ana ka kite ano au ko te ‘kupu whakarite’ he momo kiwaha kei reira ‘ki’ = mea; ‘waha’ = mangai.
# 4. The word ‘rite’ means ‘similar’.
# 4. Ko te kupu ‘rite’ he tikanga ‘similar’.
# 5. So, I like to examine just one ‘kupu whakarite’ tonight. This one is “Kua tā te ihu”.
#4.“rite”
# 6. If we check the Maori dictionary, the words “Kua tā te ihu” has been translated as “(my) nose is marked.”
# 6. Mena ka tirohia e taatau te papakupu Maori, ko nga kupu “Kua tā te ihu” kua whakamaorihia hei “(taku) ihu kua tohua.”
# 7. The real meaning of this ‘kupu whakarite’ is ‘appeased’ or ‘satisfied’.
# 7. Ko te tino tikanga o tenei ‘kupu whakarite’ he ‘whakamarie’ he ‘kua makona’ ranei.
# 8. Let us say that we have just had a delicious meal.
# 8. Me kii noa kua kai taatau i etahi kai reka.
# 9. We can then say “Kua tā te ihu” to express the level of our satisfaction with the meal.
# 9. Ka taea e taatau te kii “He tika te ihu” hei whakaatu i te taumata o to tatou koa i roto i te kai.
# 10. “Kua tā te ihu” is also an expression of appreciation to the cooks.
# 10. Ko te “Kua tā te ihu” he tohu hoki mo te maioha ki nga kai tunu kai.
# 11. Thanks for listening to me.
# 11. Nga mihi mo te whakarongo ki ahau.
