A Race to Remember

The Little Deer and The Little Rabbit

This story is written for grandparents to read to their young grandchildren within the age group of three to five years old.

Zhège gùshì shì wèi zǔfùmǔ xiě gěi sān dào wǔ suì niánlíng duàn de niánqīng sūnzimen ér xiě de.

Once upon a time, there was this huge clearing within a forest where animals roamed.

Céngjǐhéshí, sēnlín li yǒu jùdà de kòngdì, nà li yǒu dòngwù mànyóu.

A deer had raced with many other animals and won every race.

Yī zhǐ lù yǔ xǔduō qítā dòngwù sàipǎo, yíngdéle měi yī chǎng bǐsài.

“I am the fastest runner in this area,” he declared to his friends that gathered around him.

Tā xiàng jùjí zài tā zhōuwéi de péngyǒumen xuānchēng:“Wǒ shì zhège dìqū zuì kuài de pǎobù zhě.”

A rabbit came along and said to the deer, “Do you think you can race with me in the forest?” he asked.

“Why not,” he angrily answered, “I am the greatest runner on earth,” he said.

Yī zhǐ tùzǐ zǒu guòlái duì lù shuō:“Nǐ rènwéi nǐ kěyǐ zài sēnlín lǐ hé wǒ sàipǎo ma?” Tā wèn.

Tā shēngqì de shuō:“Wèishéme bù ne? Wǒ shì dìqiú shàng zuì wěidà de pǎobù zhě.”

On that race day, every animal gathered to watch that race in the forest.  The Elephant was the judge and he marked out the race track.  The Monkeys were there as linesmen to line up along both sides of the track so that no animal could enter the track while the race was on.

Zài nà yītiān de bǐsài zhōng, měi zhǐ dòngwù dōu jùjí zài sēnlín lǐ guānkàn zhè chǎng bǐsài. Dà xiàng shì cáipàn, tā huà dìngle sài dào. Hóuzi zài nàlǐ zuòwéi xún biān yuán zài sài dào liǎng cè páiduì, yīncǐ bǐsài jìnxíng shí méiyǒu dòngwù kěyǐ jìnrù sài dào.

The Deer and the Rabbit got ready at the starting blocks.  “Are you ready, get set,” the Elephant shouted and then he bellowed “Go,” with his long nose raised.

Away the Deer and the Rabbit raced.

Lù hé tùzǐ zài qǐpǎo jiēduàn yǐ zuò hǎo zhǔnbèi. “Nǐ zhǔnbèi hǎole, mǎshàng jiù yào kāishǐle.” Dà xiàng dà hǎn, ránhòu tā yáng qǐ bízi, hǒujiào “qù”.

Lù hé tùzǐ pǎo dé jǐn kěnéng kuài.

Every animal looked at the Deer who started well ahead of the Rabbit.  But soon, because there were too many bushes and trees, his horns on his head of the deer were bumping into the trees that affected his speed.

Měi zhǐ dòngwù dōu wàngzhe yuǎn zài tùzǐ qiánmiàn de lù. Dànshì hěn kuài, yóuyú guànmù cóng hé shùmù tài duō, lù tóu shàng de jiǎo zhuàng dàole shùmù shàng, yǐngxiǎngle tā de sùdù.

In the meanwhile, the Rabbit was racing well.  He looked behind him and saw the Deer, panting.  At the finishing line which the Rabbit crossed, every animal there was cheering for the Rabbit.

“Rabbit, Rab..bit,” they encouraged the Rabbit on.

Tóngshí, tùzǐ pǎo dé hěn hǎo. Tā xiàng hòu kàn, kànjiàn lù chuǎnzhe cū qì. Zài tùzǐ yuèguò de zhōngdiǎn xiàn shàng, nàlǐ de měi zhǐ dòngwù dōu wèi tùzǐ huānhū.

“Tùzǐ,Rab..Bit”, tāmen gǔlì tùzǐ qiánjìn.

When the Deer arrived at the finishing post, the Deer felt embarrassed and cried.  He bowed his head and had nothing to say.

The Rabbit was not proud.  He came to the Deer and said,
Actually, you run a lot faster than me,” he comforted the Deer.  “But, it is only because of the environment, that I beat you.”

Dāng lù dàodá zhōngdiǎn zhàn shí, lù gǎndào gāngà hé kūqì. Tā dīxià tou, wú huà kě shuō.

Tùzǐ bìng bù jiāo’ào. Tā lái dào lù shuō:“Shíjì shang, nín de pǎobù sùdù bǐ wǒ kuài dé duō,” tā ānwèizhe lù,“dànshì, zhǐshì yīnwèi huánjìng de yuángù, wǒ cái jíbàile nín.

The Elephant then said to the Deer, “Let this be a lesson to you, my dear Little Deer,” he said.  “Always to humble and learn from others.  Do not brag.  Everyone of us has our own strengths and our own weaknesses.  Winning is all relative.”

The Little Deer lowered his head still further and he understood this lesson now learnt!

Dà xiàng ránhòu duì lù shuō:“Qīn’ài de xiǎolù, zhè duì nǐ shì yīgè jiàoxùn,” tā shuō. “Yǒngyuǎn yào qiānxū, xiàng biérén xuéxí. Bùyào chuīniú. Wǒmen měi gèrén dōu yǒu zìjǐ de yōudiǎn hé quēdiǎn. Shènglì shì xiāngduì de.”

Xiǎolù jìnyībù dīxiàle tóu, tā zhīdào xiànzài yǐjīng xué dàole zhè yī kè!

“Never underestimate others.  Accept other people’s suggestions humbly. When we succeed, we must remain calm and humble, so that we can think of better ways of doing things. If we become proud, we will easily fail and will fall behind. We need to do things steadily to achieve our successes.”

“永远不要低估别人。要谦虚地接受别人的建议。当我们成功时,我们必须保持镇定和谦虚,以便我们能想到更好的做事方式。如果我们感到自豪,我们将很容易失败并落伍。我们需要稳步做事以取得成功。”

“Yǒngyuǎn bùyào dīgū biérén. Yào qiānxū de jiēshòu biérén de jiànyì. Dāng wǒmen chénggōng shí, wǒmen bìxū bǎochí zhèndìng hé qiānxū, yǐbiàn wǒmen néng xiǎngdào gèng hǎo de zuòshì fāngshì. Rúguǒ wǒmen gǎndào zìháo, wǒmen jiāng hěn róngyì shībài bìng luòwǔ. Wǒmen xūyào wěnbù zuòshì yǐ qǔdé chénggōng.”
