Anwar Ibrahim

Anwar Ibrahim, from Malaysia.

How r u, Sir?

I’m fine, for now

But no one can count

What God or Allah is doing

to our account?

Yes,I have been detained

For no other reason than

I was a nuisance

To someone in power.

Sodomy, they said,

Look this up

I mean, the meaning

Of the word.

Anal sex?

What a dirty crack?

But, seriously,

When

Is a private act

A criminal act?

But, truthfully,

That crime was just planted on me.

There

Was no evidence

Of that offence.

Just because I was young

And a rising star

As Deputy PM

Going to be

The youngest PM.

Yes, I was charged

And detained,

And convicted

Of this ‘Serious’ crime

In the land so fine

called Malaysia.

But, I knew

Deepest in my heart

That the truth will

Prevail.

I was acquitted

After spending six year

In prison.

But, I took no action

For the injustice done.

I just prayed

And you know what

I studied

I read

I learned

I’m optimistic

That justice should be

Not just only seen

But actually, BE.

I returned

And I convinced

The youths of my country

That I was wronged

That I was strong

That I was like Mandela

Never surrender!

I became the Leader

Of the Opposition

Capturing the majority

Of the votes cast

But not the highest

Number of

MP’s

In the House.

I raised the question

Of wrongful detention

Of people without trial

Of people with different

Political orientation.

The Internal

Security Act

Cannot be applicable

In today’s world.

It was used

By the British

During those years

When they ruled

And found no answer

to the continued

Communist

Infiltration

Of

The population.

Arrest those they

Suspect to be

A communist.

And convincingly

The law now

Applies for those

Whom

The authority finds

To be offensive,

And

In opposition to

That blatant rule.

Arrest without trial!

Why?

“It’s good for the country”

“It’s good for the people”

“It’s democracy,

And not silly,

And in the public’s

Interest to have this

Person kept

In prison.”

Let us pray! Allaahu Akbar! Namo Amituofo! https://youtu.be/D3yw1Si-Ad4

My name is Anwar Ibrahim from Malaysia. I used to be the Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia.

I am now opposition leader (Year: 2014) waiting for the final supreme court federal court decision whether to affirm a conviction of five years or enhance the imprisonment sentence in matter of days or weeks or to be acquitted of the charges.  It’s great to be back here at Georgetown University (Georgetown University is a private research university in the Georgetown neighbourhood of Washington, D.C.) and my wife Azizah used to tell me the best years spent here at the University.

This discourse about education excellence with our soul must resonate quite well here because the issues of faith, values, ethics, social justice are strongly entrenched embedded at Georgetown University. I’ll share for a moment my journey not as elaborate that of Ithaca, but Azizah would paraphrase that Robert Frost’s “less travel” to “seldom travel” or “travel only by crazy people”.

[ASIDE] “The Road Not Taken By Rober Frost

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,

And sorry I could not travel both

And be one traveler, long I stood

And looked down one as far as I could

To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,

And having perhaps the better claim,

Because it was grassy and wanted wear;

Though as for that the passing there

Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay

In leaves no step had trodden black.

Oh, I kept the first for another day!

Yet knowing how way leads on to way,

I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh

Somewhere ages and ages hence:

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I -

I took the one less traveled by,

And that has made all the difference.”

尽我所能低头看一个        到它在灌木丛中弯曲的地方;

[Resume] TEDx Talks 260,649 views  Nov 20, 2014

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences.  Malaysian Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim talks about his commitment to the ideals of empowerment, justice, and equity.  His trials have included arrest and imprisonment for his unrelenting campaign against corruption and but he soldiers on as the strongest-ever challenge to the ruling coalition in Malaysia.  In this talk, he explains his determination to continue the “Reformasi” campaign and the struggle for freedom and democracy despite a looming five-year prison sentence.

Malaysia’s Anwar Ibrahim, once a rising political star expected to succeed Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, is now the leader of the Malaysian Opposition.  The creator of the “Reformasi” campaign of reforming the Malaysian political structure, he is an ardent supporter of democracy and is an authoritative voice in bridging the gap between East and West.  He is viewed as one of the forefathers of the Asian Renaissance and a leading proponent of greater cooperation among civilisations.

So, these were the 70s and I was a student leader and social activist, in the North Provinces of West Malaysia. There were reports of grinding poverty of even starvation and we, the leaders, led the students for mass demonstration. The response was mass arrests. The demonstrations only took two weeks and I was detained under the notorious Internal Security Act.

Like the sedition laws introduced by the then colonial English rule, the select mass arrests became then a mass detention. For two years there was no trial, no due process, just one mighty pen and that’s it. Two years or ten years - purely the discretion of the Minister of Home Affairs.

After two years, I was released and I continued my work with Muslim youths, with Malaysian youths - Christians, Buddhists, Hindus - all from the and the Malaysian Youth Council.  We talked about reform, social justice and freedom and democracy, always believing that Malaysia, as a developing country, must mature as a fair democracy.

Then I joined the government believing seriously in the need for reform within the system of governance. I rose very quickly from Deputy Minister to Finance Minister and Deputy Prime Minister.

In time, the bosses did not like the fact that you were the seed to be a serious competitor to the leadership of the Party.  In 1998, because i was clamouring for reform and for major changes into the anti-corruption laws, I had to face the wrath of the very corrupt in the country.  I was arrested and badly assaulted.  I had the honour of being assaulted not by a normal policeman but by the Inspector General of Police himself.  The response by the then Prime Minister was “Well Anwar is a showman this is self-inflicted.”   But thanks to the support of the international media civil society organisation, the Amnesty International human rights watch and many other similar organisations of society, my story was known to many internationally.

After six years of solitary confinement where I had my period for contemplation, for meditation, reading the classics including the entire works of Shakespeare with copious notes, I learned to be a better person.  I was busy also singing Elvis Presley, Rick Nelson, Neil Sadaka and the Beatles.  There are heaps of advantages in memorising the lyrics of songs, the main one being to keep the mind from being deranged.   In September 2004 the Supreme Court of the country overturned the decision and I was a free man again.
