Let Us Dream

This is an ‘easy to read’ 149-pages booklet spoken by Pope Francis in his conversation with Austen Ivereigh on the topic of the current COVID19 pandemic. Thanks to my friend HoKee who presented this to me last year as a Chinese New Year present. I have read this book twice over and I am totally convinced that the current Omicron is just another test of our faith in God. For me the word ‘God’ does not denote the Catholic ‘God’ or the Christian ‘God’. The word ‘God’ here means your ‘God’ - your ‘God’ who cares for the human race; your ‘God’ who is speaking to you frequently; your ‘God’ who guides your life and your path to the place you meant to be after this life.

“To come out of this crisis better, we have to (1) see clearly, (2) choose well and (3) act right. Let us talk about how. Let us dare to dream.” https://www.simonandschuster.com/books/Let-Us-Dream/Pope-Francis/9781982171865

“Wèile gèng hǎo de zǒuchū zhè chǎng wéijī, wǒmen bìxū (1) kàn qīngchǔ,(2) xuǎnzé hǎo,(3) zhèngquè xíngshì. Ràng wǒmen tán tán rúhé. Ràng wǒmen gǎnyú mèngxiǎng.”

“We must redesign the economy so that it can offer every person access to a dignified existence while protecting and regenerating the natural world.” https://youtu.be/x-i4rIrm7Nw

“Wǒmen bìxū chóngxīn shèjì jīngjì, ràng měi gèrén dōu néng huòdé yǒu zūnyán de shēnghuó, tóngshí bǎohù hé zàishēng zìrán shìjiè.”

The book emphases on three little steps to take whenever we meet up with any difficulty in our life. Step number 1: See and Observe. Have a quiet time to look around and see, and observe. “Another days missionary in the Pacific told me of a tree sticking up from the water. He asked: Was that tree planted in the sea? The other man steering the boat replied: No, that was once an island when I was a child.”

The second little step number two is “To Choose”. I was deeply moved by what the Pope said in pages 57 and 58 of that chapter on “A Time to Choose”: “The Spirit shows us new things through what the Church calls ‘signs of the times.’ Discerning the signs of the times allows us to make sense of change. In interpreting and praying over events or trends in the light of the Gospel, we can detect movements that reflect the values of God’s Kingdom or their opposite.

” In every age people experience ‘hung and thirst for righteousness, a cry that goes up from the margins of God’s Spirit, it allows us to open up to that movement in thought and action, and so create a new future according to the spirit of the Beatitudes.

For example, one sad sign of our times is the exclusion and isolation of the elderly. A significant number of all COVID19 deaths have been in elderly care homes. Those who died were vulnerable not just because of their age but because of the conditions in many of those homes: underfunded, neglected, dependent on high turnover of poorly paid workers, …

“What is the greatest fruit of a personal crisis? I would say patience, sprinkled with a healthy sense of humour, which allows we to endure and make space for change to happen.” https://youtu.be/6YFntoaRy1c 9 am Adult Forum: Pope Francis’ book Let Us Dream, August 22, 2021.

“Gèrén wéijī de zuìdà chéngguǒ shì shénme? Wǒ xiǎng shuō de shì nàixīn, jiā shàng jiànkāng de yōumò gǎn, zhè ràng wǒmen nénggòu rěnshòu bìng wèi gǎibiàn de fǎ shēng chuàngzào kōngjiān.”

St Paul’s Episcopal Cathedral In his 2020 book, “Let Us Dream: The Path to a Better Future,” Pope Francis contends that the COVID-19 pandemic is a crisis that, like all crises, challenges us to analyse our situation and to make the changes necessary for true human flourishing. What has COVID-19 taught us about our society’s distortions and inequalities? What political and economic transformations does our time–and our Christian faith–demand? Mary Doak, PhD, Professor of Theology at the University of San Diego and member of St. Paul’s Cathedral will be the guest speaker.

On page 107, the Pope said: “The current crisis calls us to recover our sense of belonging: only thus will our peoples again be subjects of their now history. This is a time to restore an ethics of fraternity and solidarity, regenerating the bonds of trust and belonging. Fo what saves us is not an idea but an encounter. Only the face of another is capable of awakening the best of ourselves. In serving the people, se save ourselves. If we are to come out of this crisis better, we have to recover the knowledge that as a people we have a shared destination. The pandemic has reminded us that no one is saved alone.

Hope. 希望 Xīwàng

When the storm has passed and the roads are tamed

and we are the survivors of a collective shipwreck.

With tearful heart and our destiny blessed

we will feel joy simply for being alive.

And we’ll give a hug to the first stranger

and praise our good luck that we kept a friend.

And then we’ll remember all that we lost

and finally learn everything we never learned.

And we’ll envy on one for all of us have suffered

and we’ll not be idle but more compassionate.
