Tang Dynasty City, Singapore

The Year was 1980. The Month just skipped my memory, but, as a guess, this must be between the months of July and September, on our way to Hong Kong and Canton, as part of team working for New Zealand’s Fletcher Construction (Overseas Division). In Singapore, the team worked towards gaining the contract for the construction of the National University Hospital using prestressed concrete beams and floors. I was recruited by Fletchers from Singapore a year ago and I was proud to be able to work for the bringing together of two construction companies - Lam Chang Building Contractor Ltd of Singapore and Fletchers Construction of New Zealand together in a joint venture to win the bidding for the National University Hospital project.

That was during New Zealand Prime Minister Muldoon’s era, where export incentives were given to companies for exporting NZ skills and products abroad.

That aside, while I was in Singapore during that period, I re-visited some tourist attractions in Singapore and this included the Tang Dynasty Village located in Jurong Industrial Township.

Tang Village was a movie town theme park constructed next to the Jurong Lake by a joint venture between the Hong Kong’s TV Holdings Ltd and the Singapore Broadcasting Corporation. The project cost was S$50 million at the time. In the year 1990, the village was remodelled and upgraded with the name changed to Tang Dynasty Village. Unfortunately, the Village was closed down in the year 1999, due to the lack of tourism and the cost of movie production in Singapore was deemed to be too high.

Let us now watch the marketing video of Tang Dynasty made in the early 1990’s in the hope of boosting tourist numbers. https://youtu.be/sLKkaYY47Fo

https://youtu.be/sLKkaYY47Fo

Take a good look at the photograph here. We can see two or three high rise blocks of residential apartments of Jurong Town in the background.

At the village street, we saw two monkeys performing acrobatic acts at the sound of differing beats of a gong by their trainer.

The Street Scene of the Village with timber houses built on strong timber stilts, no doubt standing on some concrete footings.

There was a marriage procession along the main street while we were there at the Village.

Later, Terry and I visited a wine shop and entered the Dragon Room of the “Royal Palace”.

We also visited the Village Temple.
