What an unusual opening move by Black after White’s traditional beginning of e4!

The game is over in 16 moves. Here are the recorded moves of the two players:

White was not familiar with the c5 move and he stuck on the traditional second move, d4.

When Black replied with 2. … c x d4 White replied with 3. Q x d4, placing the Q at the centre of the Board.

Black threatened White’s Q by moving Nd6. White’s Q retreated back to d1.

Then Black played 4. …   g6 instead of what was usual, Nf6.  Black’s plan appeared to  be to get the Bishop out to g7.

White’s move 5. Bb5 wanting to exchange N with B might sound great but it would have been better if White played Nf3 to start at releasing the N into the game.  The reply by Black Bg7 was expected.

6. B x c6 by White was a bad move.  As mentioned, Nc3, would be a better move.

The next four moves: 6. ,,, b x c6; 7. Nf3   Ba6;   8. Nc3   Rb8;  9. Bs3.  Nf6;  and 10. e5.  Ng4 were all standard moves.

7. … Ba6 was a good move as it stopped White from castling on the K’s side.

Move # 10 by White, 10. e5 was a mistake and did not further develop the pieces and did not defend the pawn at b2.

White’s 11. h3 was a mistake. 11. Qd4 would be a better move, still threatening Black’s N while making way for castling on the Q side. This would have prevented the eventual defeat.

Three more mistakes by White ended the game.  The last mistake was a blunder.

Follow on: 11. h3 (mistake)    N x e3

12. f x e3.  R x b2

13. Rb1 (another mistake)    Kf2 would have been a better move

13. …   R x b1

14. N x b1.   Qa5+

15. c3 (mistake again).   Better to have moved Qd2

15. …    Qxa2

16. Qc1 (blunder here)   The danger would have been avoided had White moved Nd2.

16. …    Qe2#. Check Mate.
