Trimming the fencing shrubS 修剪植物围栏

The above is a photograph of two adjacent boundary fencing shrubs. The fencing shrubs on the left-hand side are tidy and trimmed. The fencing shrubs on the right-hand side are untrimmed and left to grow wild on their own.

In Hanyu Pinyin: Shàng tú shì liǎng gè xiāng lín de biānjiè wéilán guànmù de zhàopiàn. Zuǒ cè de zhàlán guànmù zhěngqí bìng xiūjiǎn. Yòu cè de zhàlán guànmù wèi xiūjiǎn, kě zìxíng shēngzhǎng.

My wife and I came to settle in Auckland in1979 forty-one years ago. We came with our four children (aged then were fourteen, ten, eight, and six) and my mother (then sixty-two years old and I am her only child). We came from Singapore in a totally urbanized environment. The family members had to start learning to mow our lawns, to plant our fruit trees, and to manage a small plot of the vegetable garden. We also learned to do our own DIY’s (Do It Yourself) in interior renovation and even co-ordinated the construction of the second level in our family home.

My wife and I have retired now and the four children have moved out of our house to manage their own families. Because of my backaches, I have not been mowing the lawn for a long time now, outsourcing this task to a lawn mowing contractor. The trimming of our fencing shrubs was also contracted out.

The photograph here shows our boundary shrubs, taken last month, in early August 2020.

The contractor had trimmed the fencing plants nine months ago. It did look good but on closer inspection, there were lots of other wild plants growing inside the main plants, all from seeds blown from neighboring flowers. We then decided to have the boundary plants trimmed and pruned by ourselves.

Zhèlǐ de zhàopiàn xiǎnshìle wǒmen shàng gè yuè zài 2020 nián 8 yuè shàngxún pāishè de biānjiè zhíwù. 
Chéngbāo shāng zài jiǔ gè yuè qián xiūjiǎnle wéilán zhíwù. Tā kàn qǐlái quèshí bùcuò, dànshì zǐxì jiǎnchá hòu, zhǔyào zhíwù nèibù hái yǒu xǔduō qítā yěshēng zhíwù, tāmen dōu shì cóng línjìn huāduǒ chuī lái de zhǒngzǐ zhōng shēngzhǎng chūlái de. Ránhòu, wǒmen juédìng yóu wǒmen zìjǐ xiūjiǎn biānjiè zhíwù.

Because of the fact that both of us have backaches, we decided that we would only do two hours a day in fifteen minutes slots - that is to say, 15 minutes on and 15 minutes off. We planned to spend three days a week and eventually, we had the trimming completed in four weeks.

Yóuyú wǒmen liǎ dōu yǒu bèi tòng de shìshí, wǒmen juédìng měitiān huāfèi liǎng gè xiǎoshí lái wánchéng zhè xiàng xiūzhěng gōngzuò. Wǒmen hái juédìng jiāng liǎng gè xiǎoshí fēn wéi bā gè shíwǔ fēnzhōng, ránhòu jìnxíng 15 fēnzhōng de xiūzhěng, bìng zài jiē xiàlái de 15 fēnzhōng nèi xiūxí. Wǒmen jìhuà měi zhōu huāfèi sān tiān, zuìzhōng, wǒmen zài sìzhōu nèi wánchéngle xiūzhěng.

We started at the corner of our property where the two boundaries met. The neighbor’s plants are taller and bushier. When we started, the leaves from the neighbor’s property were dangling into our boundary, growing wildly. We trimmed their plants to exposed our timber fencing and continued to trim a smoother surface, facing us.

We then concentrated on our own lower boundary plants.

We bought a 2 cubic metre Flexi Bin to place all the cut-out plants and debris into. We had to hand-carry the cut-out plants to the Flexi Bin which was placed in a location for ease of carting away by a mechanical hauler. That location was the nearest to our driveway.

The completed job looks good and we are both satisfied that the trimming of our plants has proven successful.
