The Wang Brothers

This fictitious story of three Wang Brothers is based on three real-life experiences of my friends. It is also based on an original Chinese children’s mythical (folklore tale) story with a moral that seeking happiness in life is more important than seeking pots and pots of gold.

What I have done here is to relate the first part of my story in the following paragraphs and then I would like to invite you, the readers, to write your versions of the Wang Brothers’ lives after the year 1979 October 1st. Make your stories as best and as interesting as you can and post these into the comment section of this website for publication.

After the introduction of Wang Yi (王义)(born in 1950), Wang Er (王鸸)(born in 1952) and Wang San (王霰) (born in 1954) and your continuation of the story, the Chinese folklore tale on the three brothers will be told.

Wang Brothers - paragraph # 1: Three brothers from Shawan Ancient Village in Panyu District, Guangzhou Province, China, decided to go to the Guangzhou City in search of work rather than remaining poor farming on a small plot of land owned by their parents.  They promised to return to the village to meet up every ten years on China’s National Day, October 1st.

Wang Brothers - paragraph # 2: Wang Yi was the eldest.  He went to Guangzhou City and found work in a Dumpling Restaurant.  His boss found him trustworthy and honest, hard-working, and willing to learn new things.  Within ten years, he had worked himself up from the position of a waiter to one of three assistant chefs in charge of a small team of five specializing in doing Dim Sim dishes.

Wang Brothers - paragraph # 3: Wang Er, the second of the brothers went to Shenzhen.  He was a very smart and brainy child.  He schemed and plotted his career paths.  Studying at night classes and through the online internet, he found an apprentice job to a local stock-and-shares trader and learned to speculate on shares in the Stock Market. In ten years, he had made a small fortune, bought his own apartment through the financial banking loan system, married and had a young baby boy.

Wang Brothers - paragraph # 4: Wang San, the youngest, was not as bright as his second brother, but just as hardworking as his eldest.  He went to the Guangzhou Port and started work as an engineering fitter and metal worker.  Soon, he found a job as a ship’s engineering team and traveled with a trading steamship company to various cities worldwide.  After ten years, Wang San found his loved one in Malaysia and settled in Malacca, Malaysia.  By then he had twins - a boy and a girl.

Wang Brothers - paragraph # 5: The year was 1979, ten years after the brothers parted company. Wang Yi got on to a public bus and traveled back to see his parents in his village. He brought presents to give to his parents in the form of new clothes from the city. Wang Er returned to his Shawan Ancient Village with his wife and his baby boy, Wang Dai Ren (王达仁). They brought them natural herbs as presents. They also gave them cash wrapped in red packets. However, Wang San was not there in their village that year.

Now is your turn: Please write the continuation of this story after the year 1979. ………. …….. ………

Original Children’s Mythical Story from China: The True Blessing.

Once there were good brothers. They decided to travel to the city for work. When they reached a three-way-fork in the road, the eldest brother said: “Let’s break up here. Let’s choose a different road to go. Five years later, on this same day, we shall meet here again for our reunion.” The three brothers hugged each other, and each chose a path to go.

The eldest brother opened a butcher shop in a city. In five years, he carried a large bag of gold coins home.

The second brother opened a restaurant in a small village. Five years later, his pocket was also full of money.

As for the youngest brother, he became an apprentice to a kind tailor. Five years later, he went to the tailor to settle his account. The tailor calculated the young man’s wages, took out three big pieces of walnut and said to him: “The salary for five years is worth a pile of money or three walnuts that I give to you all my sincere thanks to you for your help. Choose whatever you want.” After thinking for a long time, he picked up the walnuts.

On the day of the appointment, the three brothers met at the original crossroad. The eldest and the second both took out their wallets full of money. The youngest reached into his pocket and slowly took out his three walnuts to show to his brothers.

“What’s the matter with you? Did you earn such a thing after five years of work?” the eldest brother asked. “Yes, this is the most sincere blessing I get from the boss.” The youngest brother replied.

Both brothers called him a fool and asked him to go back to the tailor to ask for his reward. The youngest had no choice but to walk away sadly. As he walked, he felt hungry, but when he touched his carry bag, he found that all his bread had been eaten earlier. As a last resort, he cracked open the first of three walnuts. He was surprised to find that a bowl of savory rice fell out of it. Then the walnut is quickly closed up again.

From then on, every time he was hungry, he opened up this walnut and he got a differing meal every time he did so.

When he reached his home, he was tired. The next day, he went back to the tailor, not to ask for his salary of the past but to be employed again as a qualified tailor. At the end of the first working day, his boss told him: “There is no need for you to ask me for your pay from now on. Just open up the second walnut, that blue one.”

He did so and was surprised to find that some currency notes fell out from the walnut and then it closed up again. Thereafter, when he was short of money, he simply opened up this blue walnut and got the exact currency notes he required for the week’s expenses.

A year on, his boss came up to him one day and asked him to open the third and last red-colored walnut. He did that and lo and behold, a beautiful lady appeared before him. This walnut then cracked up into tiny pieces.

“This is now your bride,” said his boss. The youngest brother married this kind and lovely lady and lived happily thereafter.

Aside, this youngest brother later assisted his two older brothers in their businesses and all three families lived happier thereafter.

In the year 1969, the three brothers parted company.
