5 minutes of Chess

In New Zealand, we are on the eleventh day (5th April) of our lockdown isolated-living period to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 virus. We are allowed to go out to do essential activities like shopping for groceries, banking, visiting our family doctors and chemists but we need to keep our social distance of 2 meters when we meet up with others not within our ‘bubbles’ a term that refers to those whom we stay together in our houses. We are also allowed to walk to our nearest public parks for fresh air and we also see people in family groups bicycling on the roads.

So, I spend most of my times doing what I like best, playing game after game of chess on my iPad via https://www.chess.com

https://www.chess.com

My favourite game is that of playing with another player from the internet choosing the five minutes option. I find this very challenging as I need to think of my moves fast. As a result of the speed required in such games, I often make careless, unintended moves. The five minutes game is designed such that at the end of my five minutes, and I cannot checkmate my opponent, I am deemed to be the loser.

But before we look at the recent games that others have won, let us recapitulate the basics of the Chess game in the videos below.

I play about twenty short 5-minutes a day. These short games do sharpen my mind. Every short game like this heightens the danger of careless moves. Every short game like this put me in a pressure cooker, feeling the stress but even if I do lose a game, it gives me a chance to learn from my mistakes.

The following is a game I lost yesterday, in only eight moves. I have only made one blunder, but one BIG blunder. The moves were as follows:

I was playing White and I did have five excellent moves, one good move, one Inaccurate move and yes, just one BIG Blunder of a move. In contrast, my opponent had five excellent moves and three Inaccurate moves.

The beginning of the game was the usual chess moves: 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5 Nd4

The Chess Board looks like this diagram below:

After moves # 3

At this point after three moves, both players had an equal chance of winning the game.

Let us look at the Chessboard after both players had moved five steps. 4. Nxd4 exd4 5. O-O Bd6

4. Nxd4 exd4 5. O-O Bd6
After Moves # 5

Then, 6. c3 dxc3 7. Nxc3 Qh4
Nxc3 Qh4

Two moves later, the Chessboard looks like the diagram below: 经过再两步后,Chessboard 如下图所示:

After Moves # 7

It is at this point that White failed to see the alignment of Black’s Queen going into h2 with Black’s Bishop at f6 in alignment. White made a stupid move at 8. d4 with the quick and easy win for Black at 8. … Qxh2+

End of this story. A lesson has been learned. Whenever a Bishop is aligned with a Queen, beware of being checkmated.
