Eu Tong Sen

We shall start this story with a person named Eu Kong-Pui, also known as Eu Kong (1853 - 1891). He was born in Foshan, Guangdong Province. In September 1876, he left his home and traveled to Penang, Malaya, with his wife, Leong Kum Yow, and his younger brother, Eu Kong-Chun.

In Penang, he worked as a shop assistant for a clothing store. Like many of his contemporaries during those times, he was also working part-time in several businesses.

After two years in Penang, he was entrusted to collect debts on behalf of a store owner who was an agent distributing goods from Southern China to the tin mining towns in the Malay States.

In 1881, Eu Kong took his wife and son, Eu Tong Sen back to Foshan.

After two months of living in his native country, Eu Kong left again and this time, he left for Hong Kong. He then married his second wife, Man Woon Chang, who was able to speak in English.

Together they returned to Malaya and in 1882, they won the Government’s tender bid for tin mining in Gopeng. At the same time, they became one of the revenue collectors for the Malayan British Government. Eu Kong’s business interests grew to include, in addition to tin mining, a Chinese grocery shop and a Chinese medical supply center. To help him in his busy schedule, he brought in another younger brother Eu Kong-Tak from Foshan.

Unfortunately, he died suddenly in 1891 (38 years old) and his only son, Eu Tong Sen, then aged fourteen was called back to Malaya from Foshan to run his father’s businesses.

However, Eu Tong Sen’s step-mother was able to convince his mother and his uncles that it was best for Eu Tong Sen to be educated in the English Language. He was then sent to Penang to study at the Anglo Chinese School. On reaching the age of twenty-one, Eu Tong Sen took over the running of his father’s businesses.

In 1902, Eu Tong Sen, then 25 years old, made one of his brothers-in-law, Leong Kwong Hin, from Singapore, as his personal assistant. His tin mining business grew due to him having the courage to use the expansive hydraulic pumps in his mines. By this time, he had eleven mines throughout Malaya, employing more than twelve thousand people.

By the year 1920, Eu Tong Sen’s businesses had grown to include rubber plantations, real estate, property investment, pharmaceutical products, and banking. By 1928, his businesses in the renewed name of Eu Yan Sang had extended to Hong Kong and he moved his main residence there at Repulse Bay, Hong Kong.

Eu Yan Sang, as a business entity, lived to this day. Because of the fact that no one had a majority vote, most of the family’s key businesses were sold. In the mid-1980s his grandson, Richard Eu, revamped the business to concentrate on the sale of health products and this business is still successfully operating even with an on-line platform.

Quoted from the Abstract of a research paper written by Stephanie Po-Yin Chung, Cambridge University Press, 30th August 2005. https://doi.org/10.1017/S0026749X05001873 ‘Architecture can be viewed as a reflection of the value placed on life. In colonial Hong Kong, a distinctive Gothic-style castle, Euston, was built by tycoon Eu Tong Sen (1877–1941) as his family’s grand residence. Eu was a prominent figure in South China and Southeast Asia and remains a local legend decades after his death. Eu’s castle, being built in 1928 and demolished in the 1980s, was and still is one of the most recognizable monuments in the region. Although Eu did not leave behind any autobiography or memoirs, the monumental castle can be regarded as a symbolic manifestation of his life story. The design of the castle is of mixed ancestry—it is a reconciliation of traditional Chinese design based on feng shui (Chinese geomancy) with European architectural elements. The fusion of East-West architectural building elements, as symbolized by the Eu castle, was a significant achievement symbolizing general social and cultural changes spanning more than a century.’

Stephanie Po-Yin Chung had done research on the Eu Yan Sang Business in the year 2002 and this can be read from the website https://doi.org/10.1017/S0026749X02003037

The most important aspect of Eu Tong Sen’s life that I must draw attention to was that he was a philanthropist. He contributed generously to education, most notably to the Raffles College and the University of Hong Kong. He was also active on both the political and community fronts, representing the Chinese on the Federal Council during the early 20th century, as well as taking on the role of Vice-President on the Anti-Opium Society. He was a member of the Kinta Sanitary Board, and an Unofficial Member of the Federal Legislative Council of the Federated Malay States (1912 - 1920).

During World War I, he donated a tank and two fighter planes to the British and in 1922, he was decorated with the title ‘Officer of the Most Excellent Order’ of the British Empire (OBE) for his meritorious services.

请访问euyansang.con https://www.euyansang.com/zh_CN/home?gclid=CjwKCAiA5JnuBRA-EiwA-0ggPdn1vluKRsUniqEyFlvxEaASFYZrX_8X9OCcB1_z2g2i4h49xEaSen th到他的Euthen_WenWen 1WenWenWenWenWen1就是他在Eu_sen_WenW上被拆毁了。
