Three days in Wanaka

在新西兰南岛瓦纳卡旅游了三天。

I have not been to Wanaka before this - September 2022. In my mind up until my visit, Wanaka was but a small rural township perhaps with a one or two main streets of retail shops with some side streets of industrial activities amongst cattle and lamb in miles of feeding fields. My mind was influenced by the wife of my former boss, Jo, whose brothers were hunters of wild deers in Wanaka shooting these from helicopters. I was so wrong!

Wanaka has now expanded with a bigger permanent population of around fifteen thousand and at the present time, a much bigger tourist population. The town centre is busy - take a look of the video of a four kilometres walk taken earlier this year: https://youtu.be/scRkZUpDnSM

It is also a popular ski and summer resort town in the Otago region of the South Island of New Zealand.  The southern end of Lake Wānaka is the start of the Clutha River/Mata-Au, the gateway to Mount Aspiring National Park. Its economy is based on the many outdoor opportunities these offer to tourists from the world over.  In summer the area is popular for hunting and fishing and in winter there are many skifields nearby to go to for skiing, snowboarding, etc. https://youtu.be/vIz845VfGfg

We were unable to find an accommodation in Wanaka township that was reasonably priced, so we settled on Hawea Hotel, fifteen minutes drive away at the main town centre of Wanaka.

We arrived from Haast in the afternoon of Monday, 19th September, after visiting the Blue Pools in the Mount spiring National Park on our way south, before arriving at Lake Howea.  The pools here are of deep, clear water flowing into the Makarora River. This is easily one of our best short walks in the region so far.

We were late for lunch in Wanaka, after checking into Hawea Hotel. The place we wanted to go was Big Fig, 105 Ardmore Street, Wānaka but the restaurant was closed that Monday at 2:00pm. We landed at Kai Whakapai for lunch, few doors down the same road. [See the next six photos of this restaurant below]. The five of us (we two elderlies, our daughter’s family members) had a good lunch meal there. Kai Whakapai means “food made good”. The restaurant has been described as Wanaka’s friendliest and relaxed cafe-bar that specialises in wholesome sensibly priced menu and cabinet food.

Then, the rain, in drizzles, arrived. We went to the Puzzling World, Wanaka, but decided against going in because of the rain that meant that we would not be able to do the maze (we had done similar type of 2.5m maze elsewhere before) and the illusionary images (again already done similar in Thailand). We visited the Lake View Seafood Restaurant at 1/155 Ardmore Street for our evening dinner. This Cantonese styled Restaurant served meals that suited out pallets. We had an entree of fresh salmon that was delicious. We followed up with four dishes with steamed rice to be shared by the five of us - tweet and sour pork, stir-fried combination vegetables, sizzling beef on hot plate, and hot and spicy bean with minced pork. In fact, the food was so delicious that we went back the next day for lunch (combination fried rice noodles) and then for dinner - another four dishes served with steamed rice.

Taking a stroll along the main commercial streets of Wanaka, we saw the shop with the unique “Untouched World” sign and went in to browse the new designer fashions of this brand. Take a look at the fashions at https://www.untouchedworld.com

Using Lake Hawea as the base, we visited the following places and took several brief walks in the nearby forests.

(1) Mt Aspiring National Park: We visited the Matukituki Valley of Mount Aspiring National Park. This Valley has many well known walking options, and it holds many beautiful canyons. https://youtu.be/g91ZmScpg2w

(3) Lake Hawea Dam and Lake Hawea Lookout: The gates of the Lake Hawea Dam were first opened in the 1950’s as part of the Roxburgh hydroelectric scheme. The aim was to provide water storage for both Roxburgh and Clyde power stations. If not for this dam, both stations would otherwise be dependent on the natural flow of the Clutha and Kawarau rivers and this could result in environmental damage. Waters entering into Lakes Roxburgh and Dunstan are now maintained within a narrow range with the Dam at Lake Hawea to minimise such environmental disasters.

(5) Arrowtown - Early Chinese Miners’ Settlement: https://youtu.be/-zUiNH1TXC4 We saw the Arrowtown’s autumn-gold leaves of the tree-lined streets. We visited what was left of the Chinese miner’s settlement colony constructed In the middle of the 19th century. The cottages and buildings in the historic Buckingham Street area represent the original core of economic activity within Arrowtown. It was said that in the year 1874, there were over 3,500 Chinese living in this settlement. They lived in huts along isolated gullies on the banks of Bush Creek at the edge of town. Some of the huts were partially restored, and we could see up-close how the Chinese miners had suffered.

Back to Wanaka, we visited （1) the Urban Grind for breakfast and lunch for the third day 21st September 2022;

(2) Zuka Japanese Restaurant for the third day, 21st September 2022;

and, (3) for lunch of the third day, 22nd September 2022, we went to “Provisions” in Arrowtown. We delayed our visit to (4) the Patagonia Chocolates - Ice Creamery & Chocolaterie until we reached Queenstown because the Queenstown shop offered more varieties of desserts.
