Frances Yip (葉麗儀) is a well known Hong Kong Cantonese artiste who sing the theme songs of many Hong Kong drama series in the 1980s and 1990s. She now stays in Sydney Australia since 2016 with her husband Briton David Lomax, and her son (from her previous marriage) and his family members (daughter-in-law, granddaughter and grandson.

Frances Yip was born in the year 1947 and on her 45th Anniversary of her debut, she held a 45th Anniversary Live performance in Hong Kong in the year 2015 https://youtu.be/Qxpkh5oowX4 This is a 2 hours 18 minutes long video and perhaps we suggest that to listen to those parts that feature her singing career first. The next song is an English song “You don’t have to say you love me,” starts at 14:14 and ends at 16:50. Then comes a few jingles - jingle songs that promotes products and were sung to the radio and TV audiences of that period - 19:46 to 23:25. Here was where her singing career actually started after winning a public signing contest organised by Hong Kong’s TVB at the tender age of fourteen. She was from a poor rural community in New Territories in Hong Kong and her sudden rise to fame was the proud moments for her parents, her siblings and her village.

Frances Yip was born in October 1947, of Hakka ancestry, in the Tseun Mun rural district of Hong Kong’s New Territories. She is the youngest of five siblings. Her father, although from poor village community, recognised the importance of English Language in a colonial setting had taken the trouble to have her apply for a scholarship to study in a Catholic Girls School of St. Clare’s located on Mt. Davis Road, Central District Hong Kong. This solid Christian education gives Frances Yip a good start in life.

Frances Yip’s first singing job was in 1969 (aged 22) when she won a Hong Kong wide televised talent quest contest. She met up with the composer from Hong Kong Television, Joseph Koo, who capitalised Yip on her singing voice, enraging her to sing TV commercial jingles while she was working as a secretary in the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC). She started with the singing of the jingle concerning the wisdom of putting regular bank saving deposits into the HSBC. In the same year, she recorded a song, Bu Liao Qing “不了情“ （Never Ending Love) for Joseph to broadcast on to the Hong Kong radio network. During the next near, she recorded predominantly English covers of popular Mandarin songs.

In 1972, Yip (then 24) and Joseph Koo went to Japan’s World Singing gathering in ‘Japan Martical Arts Hall’, one of the world’s most outstanding musical performance venues. In 1973, Yip (25) was working for Cathay Pacific as the Ambassador of Hong Kong under the Hong Kong Tourism Board, for a year. Her album, ‘Discovery’, based on her experiences in traveling to different countries, was sung in nine different languages to represent the nine major destinations for Cathay Pacific then.

That album “Discovery” inspired a London talent agent to find her and she signed onto EMI Records living in London for two years. It was a worldwide contract, meaning she could have one English album released in six different languages in different areas of the world. Since then, she had renewed her two-year contract right up to the present.

“It was my faith in God, taught to me by the Sisters and Teachers at St. Clare’s, that kept me up, protected me from evil and moving me on very busy schedules during those traveling heydays,” she had reflected.

Frances Yip hit international fame with her signature tune, The Bund (上海灘) from the TVB’s drama series with the same title. In her 45-year career, (then in the year 2015, Frances has released more than a hundred albums, not only in her native Cantonese language but also in Indonesia, Thai, Malay, Spanish, Tagolog, and Mandarin. She had performed on television, and in films, concerts and cabarets in many countries^. Her linguistic skills, with unique interpretations of lyrics in English, Cantonese and Mandarin, as well as several other Asian languages, have led to a fan base across a wide range of cultures and countries.

Frances Yip had worked with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra, the Macau Chinese Orchestra, the Singapore Chinese Orchestra, the Youth Orchestra from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, Singapore Symphony Orchestra as well as the Thammasat University Philharmonic Orchestra in Bangkok.

Frances Yip achieved worldwide recognition when she was selected by the Hong Kong government to be a co-presenter at the British Farewell Ceremony to mark the transfer of sovereignty in Hong Kong, alongside British actor Brian Blessed on 30 June 1997, watched by a television audience estimated to be at 120 million, in more than 80 countries worldwide.

葉麗儀 曾与香港管弦乐团、温哥华交响乐团、香港中乐团、澳门中乐团、新加坡中乐团、南洋艺术学院青年管弦乐团、新加坡交响乐团,Thammasat大学爱乐乐团在曼谷,等合作过。1997 年 6 月 30 日，香港政府选派葉麗儀与英国演员布赖恩·布赖德一同出席英国告别仪式，以共同主持香港主权移交仪式，并在电视观众的观看下，获得了全球认可估计为 1.2 亿，遍布全球 80 多个国家。

In 2012, Yip recorded her first Christian album, Grace and Glory Psalm 84.

She was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1996, but was fully recovered in 2002. To celebrate eight years of being cancer-free, in 2010, she held a charity concert in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to benefit cancer research and treatment there.

Since 2013, she and her husband, David Lomax, have lived in the rural suburbs of Sydney, Australia with their son and two grandchildren.

Recently (April 2021) in an exclusive Zoom interview with Malaysia’s Radio host, Chun Wai, she confessed that she had also suffered from severe depression down syndrome many times and it was her faith (and fate, God’s will) that had kept her going. https://youtu.be/R1DJyS1Pecc

I say to God, “Please take my burden. This is too heavy for me to bear. I cannot bear this anymore. Please take it away from me, and bear it for me.” And you know what, often after a little prayer like that I can’t actually sleep and rest. To me I think God is always there for me looking after me, helping me but what I actually need to do when things do go right, when I have a success in my career when the little girl is born, or even if the little boy is born I should go and say “Thank you God.”
