The South China Sea

Nán zhōngguó hǎi

I was born in Singapore. I spent my first thirty-nine years living and working there. Yet, I did not know the importance of the South China Sea and the Malacca Strait to the western countries, and to Singapore’s shipping industry until lately in my early eighties.

Wǒ chūshēng zài xīnjiāpō. Wǒ zài nàlǐ dùguòle wǒ zuìchū de sānshíjiǔ nián shēnghuó hé gōngzuò. Rán'ér, zhídào zuìjìn wǒ bāshí suì shēngrì, wǒ cái zhīdào nán huǎ hé mǎliùjiǎ hǎixiá duì xīfāng guójiā hé xīnjiāpō hángyùn yè de zhòngyào xìng.

It is believed that huge oil and natural gas reserves are lying beneath the seabed of this sea. It is also a healthy fishing ground that is crucial for food. Countries that border the waters of South China Sea include Brunei, Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam. And, the South China Sea accounts for about a third of the global maritime trade.

A lot of attention has been focused by the western press recently on China’s activities in the Spratly Islands, South China Sea. Google “Spratly Islands to read about the dispute of the Spratly Islands.

Let us read of the excerpts below:

” Does the People’s Republic of China have a right to defend its sovereignty in the waters surrounding China?  What are US aircraft carriers, destroyers, nuclear submarines, bombers and underwater drones doing in the South China Sea? China does not have any such force in the Gulf of Mexico which is about the same size, bordered by about the same number of countries.  Yet, China is depicted as an aggressor in the South China Sea. “

“Now, increasingly, there are hundreds of news stories that the big problem facing the US is China.   China is the aggressor.  China is a superpower that is throwing its weight around.  China is militarising the South China Sea and what the US is doing is just defending the people of the region especially the interests of the smaller nations who also border the South China Sea.  For us here we are pretty clear on one point — that there is nowhere in the world that the US military or the police or the intelligence agencies are defending the interests of working and oppressed people or smaller nations.”

The Chinese developed writing and the manufacturing of paper that was not copy-righted.

China discovered the compass. The Chinese, being unselfish, did not even think about copy-righting the invention.

The Chinese invented big shipping vessels and compasses and again such inventions were not copy-righted.

“Now, demonisation, especially of black and brown people here in the US, constant demonisation of immigrants and of Muslims, creates a racist atmosphere that runs so deep.”

“Now there are a few terms I want to use tonight.  It is really useful to explain, one of them, especially if we are going to talk about China, is free trade.  Now free trade has nothing to do with human freedom.  It was originally a term based on the freedom of the capitalists to carry out the African slave trade.  It was the capitalist claiming the right to property to the buying and selling of human beings but this was a sacred rite and the capitalists described the transatlantic slave trade as the bedrock of global free trade.  It had all the protection of law in every capitalist country.  It was the cornerstone of free enterprise. ”

“Now free trade meant something else in China.  In the early 1800s free trade meant the right of the British capitalist to freely trade opium in China without any restriction from the Chinese government.  It forced the Chinese market they said was going to be forced open and the Chinese government was determined to stop the opium trade.  So imposing free trade of opium on China meant war with China.   It meant occupation and conquest and pillage.  It meant British merchants who wanted the silk and the tea and the porcelain and the spices for markets in the West, but they refused to pay in silver, they demanded the right to pay in opium and their gunboats smashed the Chinese Navy.”

When I was at schools in Singapore, my mind was brainwashed by the British colonisers that communism was bad and that we need to fight the communists - especially those who believed in the Communist system of Mainland China. In Singapore, there still is the Prevention of Public Security Ordinance in place. The chief aim of that piece of legislation is for the Government of the day to arrest anyone of her citizens whom the Government believes that that person is a threat to the peace of the country. It was initially enacted to arrest suspected communist party sympathisers without trial. Now that I have lived through eighty years, I know that any government, communist or otherwise, who looks after the well beings of her citizens, is a good government, regardless of the political belief that government belongs.

“Xiànzài zìyóu màoyì zài zhōngguó yìwèizhe bié de dōngxī.
