The Lost World 1925:1925 年失落的世界
One of the largest land animals that ever existed, the dinosaur Brontosaurus is now renamed Apatosaurus. This enormous plant-eater measured about 21 to 27 m long and about 4.6 m high at its hip. It weighed about 35 tonnes. Its head was less than 600 mm long with it had a long skull and a very tiny brain. This plant-eater had a long neck, with 15 vertebrae, a long whip-like tail of about 15 m long, a hollow backbone, peg-like teeth in the front of the jaws, and four massive, column-like legs. Its hind legs were larger than the front legs.

Professor Challenger, in London‘s Office of the Records Journal, announced: “The prehistoric creatures are alive and flourishing in the Amazon jungle today and I intend to mount an expedition to prove this.”
“I volunteer to go with you,” journalist Edward Malone said. “No, you are not,” said Professor Challenger, “you will be an added burden to the team members.”
“But, ” replied Edward (Ed, for short), “I can assist you in planning your itinerary and in organising your activities. As a reporter, I can also keep proper records of events.”
Do you want to know the real reason why Ed volunteered to do this dangerous adventure? Here is the reason why … …
“I will only marry you if you can prove to me that you are willing to do at least one courageous act to make you well known to the entire City of London,” said Gladys Hungerford to Edward Malone.
Ed Malone was a journalist working in The Times, a well-respected newspaper that wanted to know the truth about Professor Challenger claim. With the help of his friend, Sir John Roxton, Ed managed to persuade his newspaper to fund the entire expedition.
Another member of the expedition was Paula White whose father was a missing explorer in a previous trip to the South America’s Amazon region where the dinosaurs were reportedly found. Then the friend of Paula’s father, Colin McArdle, also joined the team.
At the Zoological Hall, Sir John Roxton, a famous hunter and explorer, stood before a dinosaur skeleton and greeted the gathering to hear Challenger talk. Roxton was an openminded scientist and he began his introduction of the Professor: “The back country of the Amazon contains over fifty thousands miles of unexplored water-ways. I shall let Professor Challenger talk on his pet subject - his up-coming expedition - and he can answer questions later. Just to be sure that you know my position, I must tell you that I shall be a member of his team, simply because I want to verify the truth of his statements now being delivered to you. Professor … ”
At the gathering, Professor Summerlee led a boisterous crowd who shouted, “Bring on your animals! Bring on your dinosaur! We don’t believe you. ”
Paula produced her father’s sketchbook that showed “Carnivorous Beast Allosaurus” and “We scan up to a Living Brontosaurus and my father, Maple White, actually saw these monsters. They were tremendous in size and in ferocity . . . those beasts,” Paula felt faint at recounting her journey with her father.

We next saw the explorers canoeing past a leopard, a snake (at which Paula’s pet monkey Jocko freaks), and sloths. At camp, Malone’s typing indicated three weeks had passed. An apeman and his chimp sidekick dropped a boulder on to the camp, but hit no one. The explorers saw a pterodactyl fly to the pinnacle across from the plateau and decided to fell the remaining tree in order to form a bridge to cross over. Once across the bridge, the explorers saw a Brontosaurus — feeding merely on leaves. It was perfectly harmless — unless we happened to be the first to attack the animal.
The explorers encountered an allosaurus - -a meat-eater — the most vicious pest of the ancient world. They watched an allosaurus fought another dinosaur until it fell into a bog. It also harassed a triceratops family but the two adults succeeded in protecting the young one. Te triceratops formed protective family bonds. The allosaurus went after the humans at night. They shot it in the snoot but it ran away only when they threw a torch into its mouth. Later, it has another fight with another triceratops, and the latter won. Another allosaur in turn killed the triceratops and a pterodactyl.
Ed Malone busied himself typing out records of daily events and reported these back to his newspapers.
Jocko, Paola’s pet monkey, was a valuable member of the team. The reason was that this monkey helps in delivering the string and rope ladders to the explorers in the caves of the plateau.
Fightings amongst the dinosaurs and other mammals were common sights at the Plateau.
Ed climbed up a tree to see more of the surroundings of the Plateau.
Malone and Paula grew closer together: “Now that we have found these caves we could live here for the rest of our lives — if we had some weapon capable of making a dent in a dinosaur!” Meanwhile, Roxton found the skeletal remains of Maple White and a passage out to the sheer cliff wall on the other side of the plateau. He also found the pocket watch of Maple White that had the photograph of Paola etched inside the cover.
A volcano then erupted and animals run in panic. Fire spreads, but no human was killed. Afterwards, baby dinos eat the corpses of other mammals. Jocko climbed with ropes to be handed to the others on the plateau top. The explorers climbed down rope ladders. The last one down was almost pulled up again by the apeman, but a bullet made him drop the ladder.
The explorers built a steel cage and a raft to transport one brontosaur back to London. When unloading the cage, the cables broke and the brontosaur ran wild in the streets. It knocked people down with its swiping tail. It knocked over statues and burned its snow on streetlamp. Tower bridge over River Thames was not sturdy enough for it. The brontosaur fell through the bridge and into the water. It swam out to sea and was never seen again.
