Why Study Quantity Surveying?
A Quantity Surveyor is a Cost Accountant in the Construction Industry.
No, that starting sentence was not what I intended. Allow me to re-start.
The sudden arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic is going to change the lives of many. The travel, hospitality, and food/beverage industries have all been affected, making many New Zealand citizens jobless for the first time.
New Zealanders are fortunate to have a government that provides not only subsidies to the unemployed but also subsidized free trade training and education for those who have been made redundant due to the pandemic. Added to those made jobless in the country are the many Hong Kong New Zealanders who are returning to New Zealand to work due to the current unrest in the former British territory. I am drawing the attention of these groups of New Zealanders who can now be retrained in the government-funded construction sector jobs.
In this article, I am encouraging these groups to consider retraining in construction management and quantity surveying roles.
In addition, I am willing to provide initial free tuition on a variety of quantity surveying subjects like Cost Estimating, Taking-off Quantities, Bill of Quantities (BQ), Critical Path Analysis, and Cost Planning in construction projects.
Now that this is made clear, I can restate the first sentence of this essay. A Quantity Surveyor is a Cost Accountant in the Construction Industry.
Traditionally, only a very few of our brighter secondary school students ever select the construction and quantity surveying as their careers. Unlike Singapore where I was from, there is no government encouragement or incentives for brighter secondary school leavers to enter what is termed ‘blue-collar’ jobs. I was fortunate to have obtained Singapore government scholarships to study both quantity surveying and property valuation in London in the early 1960s.
I shall now try my best to persuade you to enter the quantity surveying profession if you are (1) made jobless because of COVID-19; (2) New Zealanders returning to New Zealand from Hong Kong or from Taiwan, wanting to have a mid-life change in career; and (3) secondary school leavers about to consider a university education.
Back in the 1970s, I worked as the Contracts Officer of the Singapore Housing and Development Board, in charge of all Quantity Surveying activities of Singapore’s low-cost housing. In the 1980s, I developed computer programs for Quantity Surveyors as the CEO of Heap Computing Limited. Below are the logical flow diagrams done during those days:
