Still Married 还是夫妻

‘Still Married’ is translated as 还是夫妻 (pinyin: Háishì fūqī) which literary is ‘Remaining Husband and Wife’. It is a Chinese drama that illustrates the stress and strains of marital relationships in urban city living. The story recounts the experiences of three couples with different backgrounds. It deals with their work problems, their middle-aged crisis, their conflicts with in-laws, and their different methods of raising children.

Adding to the mix is the story of s single mother struggling to raise up her young primary school daughter.  The willingness of one of the three friends wanting to help a pregnant mother causes a range of difficult-to-explain situations. 

Two mothers-in-law living together in the same household can create problems of its own for the couple trying to raise a child at the same time.

The main characters in the Story are:

(1) Lin Xiao （actress Ma Su) is a lady architect with her own successful practice and she is a workaholic. Lin Xiao is not a traditional Chinese lady. After giving birth to her son Tang Dou, she is unwilling to be the traditional housewife. She still chooses to continue to work in her practice and assigned her accountancy trained husband, Tang Jian, the responsibility of caring for their son.

(2) Tang Jian (Actor Guo Tao) As a friend, he can be a perfect mate. As a husband, he can be loyal and faithful to you. But, the peaceful and happy two-person world is broken once baby Tang Dao arrives. The original harmonious relationship between husband and wife is now on the verge of collapse.

(3) Yu Ying (Actress: Su Yan). Hot mom, after giving birth to her daughter, she throws up her hands in the air, and she dumps all the family chores to her husband. She continues to do her work as a beautician and body shaper and enjoys her life. When she finds out that her young daughter has autism tendencies, she suddenly wakes up and devotes herself to her daughter’s rehabilitation.

(4) Xu Zhile (Actor Han Qing) is a tender dad who gives up his career to take up the care of his baby daughter. He and his good friends, Tang Jian and Da Cai, are not only good friends but they also face similar life problems. He witnessed the friction between his friend Tang Jian and his wife Lin Xiao simply because of the change of their life’s status after marriage.

(5) Dacai (Actor Zhou Xiaoou) is Tang Jian’s buddy. He does have a rough and tough appearance, but he is a warm-hearted man. Because he bears the status of a “fake marriage”, his relationship with his girlfriend is strained and tends to heat up. His life experiences tend to be interrupted by unexpected consequences.

(6) Wang Ke (Actress Xu Jieer). Tang Jian’s former assistant. After Tang Jian’s divorce, she has the chance to hold hands with Tang Jian again. But because of Tang Jian’s remarriage with his ex-wife, she has to leave Tang Jian and she goes to a faraway place, away from her familiar surroundings. After experiencing the trough of life, she suddenly awakes to face her a new and enlightened life.

（7）Zheng Xiaorong （Actor Xu Ge). Xiaorong, a new age lady classified as ‘the 90s’, is full of energy and pioneering spirit. She is lively, beautiful, and witty.

There are thirty-six episodes in this drama. The various real-life stories are of interest to all ages as they portray the various relationship issues between (a) two elderly ladies; (b) husbands and wives; (c) spouses and in-laws; (d) parenting, and (e) school going young children and their parents.

The drama is a light-hearted family comedy. For our English speaking friends, the only pity is the fact that there are no English subtitles. However, if we view the 45 episodes in the muted mode, the stories of each episode are quite easy to follow.

辣妈，在产女后便做起了甩手掌柜，将家庭琐事全部甩给丈夫，专情于美容塑身，享受生活。直到发现年幼的女儿出现自闭症倾向，才令她幡然醒悟，投身于女儿的康复治疗。

(4) 徐知乐. 演员 韩青.
一个放弃事业全力照顾孩子的温情奶爸，他和唐健、大蔡不仅是好朋友，也同时面临着相似的生活问题。他亲眼见证了好友唐健与妻子林筱因为生活中地位的转变而带来的摩擦。

唐健的好哥们，外表粗狂，实际却是暖男一枚。因为他背上了“假结婚”的身份，每次与女友感情要有升温之势，就会遭遇突发状况被打断。
