Heavenly Father, we give thanks to You for bringing us back to Christchurch these eight days. We give thanks to You for showering us with Your blessings and for Your guidance. During the year, You have taught us to be patient, to understand You more and to care for those amongst who are not as fortunate as we are. You have taught us the true meaning of Mark 12: 30-31, repeated here. “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’  The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.” Thank You, Lord. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

It was exactly a year ago that we first visited Christchurch after the destruction of most buildings in central Christchurch during the Darfield Earthquake of September 2010.

During the last visit, we toured the inner city center where almost a total rebuild of the CBD (Central Business District) was taking place. This time, we revisited the CBD and noted that the progress of renovations and repairs works are still in progress. The new Library (Turanga) at Cathedral Square had just been completed. This library has a floor area of over 9,000 square meters and built at a cost of over $90 million.

The main entrance to the Library is a large welcoming foyer designed to be an extension of the public open space of the square. The ground floor is known as the Urban Carpet, linking the new Library to the outdoor public display area, in the Performing Arts Precinct. The new Convention Centre is still in the construction stage.

This time last year, we did a city center tour by tram, did punting on the River Avon, toured the Botanic Gardens, went up the Christchurch Gondola, and entered the Time Tunnel.

Ah! I almost forget. We also did a visit to the Air Force Museum at Wigram, and to the Cardboard Church at Hereford Street.

During the eight days of our stay in Christchurch, we went further away into the suburbs. We were exploring the food courts and we found that the best value food court meals were at Hornby Shopping Centre. At its Sushiland, for instance, a fistful of boiled rice with beef, chicken or pork fillings was available for only $6.50 - a very satisfying lunch.

We visited The Tannery at Garlands Road, Woolston too and window-shopped for Winter-wear.

We spent a time relaxing at my daughter’s house of residence at Riccarton with Chewy, her pet dog, a Shih Tzu.
