Hardships & Suffering

Let us start this topic with a prayer.

Tatou ka tiimata tenei kaupapa ma te inoi.

Heavenly Father, we give thanks to You for taking care of us and of our needs.

We give thanks to you Lord for the many blessings that You have showered upon us. We give thanks to You for all the opportunities that You have open up for us.

But, Lord, more than ever, we give thanks to You for all the hardships and sufferings we have been through along the ways in which You teach us and You mold us into the golden witness of Your greatness. Continue to show us Your path and Your way and to lead us to lives that are truly meaningful to our societies, to our communities and to the very image of You. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Amene.

Why? Humanity is plagued with the terrible suffering of every kind — starvation, disease, poverty, war, natural disasters. Why does God allow pain? If God is all-powerful and loves all humans, why does He not stop the terrible agony billions endure? https://youtu.be/dqr3Dwz6wTE https://youtu.be/dqr3Dwz6wTE whara te taangata ki nga mamae nui o nga momo - te hiakai, te mate, te rawakore, te pakanga, nga parekura taiao.

Yes, Where are You, God?

https://youtu.be/dqr3Dwz6wTE

He aha te Atua ka whakaaetia ai te mamae? Mena he Atua te kaha o te Atua, e aroha ana ki nga taangata katoa, he aha i kore ai e mutu i a ia te maha o nga mamae piriona?

Having been living a life that witnesses the ‘ups’ and the ‘downs’ on more occasions than most of my friends, my answer to the question “Why allow hardships and sufferings?” takes the following five main points. But, before disclosing that, I like to share a song from my Church visit yesterday (Sunday, 3rd November 2019)

Morning to Night: (Mandarin with English subtitles) https://youtu.be/QvfB1-FpfWk

Tiffany M. Cheng
Sandy Yu

I opened my eyes in the morning. Eager to listen to the sound Good thoughts in my heart More close to you I still have to sing at night. Train my mind Worship into a song Just sing to listen From morning to night From the wilderness to the mountains Dear Lord, I want to praise the name. From morning to night Love never stops Dear Lord, follow your life closely. My Lord, I love you. I want to exaggerate that love is endless My Lord, I love you. I want to exaggerate the love is endless

I huaki oku kanohi i te ata.
Kaare te whakarongo ki te oro
Nga whakaaro pai i roto i toku ngakau
Pata atu i a koe
He himene tonu ahau.
Whakaakohia taku hinengaro

Point # 1: Without the experience of hardships and suffering, how can we learn to be compassionate?

Pure gold has to be tested and molded by high degree flames. Birds learned to fly by being dropped from high grounds with the watchful eyes of their mothers’ to ensure that their free-falls would not be on fall on hard surfaces. In fear, the young birds would begin to spread their wings, and then to fly.

So there the world goes, up and down, round and round - hardships and suffering alternating with pleasantness and enjoyable happenings. We learned from the mistakes we made. We learned empathy from the hardships we suffered. We only know how others feel when they are depressed after we ourselves have experienced downturns.

We remember God when we are in a depression. We call God for help, praying that He can come to our rescue. But, He appears not to be answering our prayers. Well, He is molding us to be in His image. He is saying to us “You are being trained. The answer to your prayer will come in My time. Just wait.”

NOTE: The Chinese and the Maori versions from Point # 1 onwards will appear after the English texts.

Point # 2: Consider the suffering of Jesus on earth.

Yes, Jesus died for us, for our sins, at the Cross. He was totally pure and blameless. He was in His heavenly kingdom but He chose to come to earth to bear the sins of mankind. Just think about this event. Jesus lived on earth for thirty-three years and on earth. He had no peace while He was here. He suffered without complaint. Just recall the fact that the innocent Jesus being nailed to the cross.

Do not believe that three nails (one punched at each of His outstretched hands and one punched on His two feet folded together would hold Him on the wooden cross. Gravity and His body weight would make Him fell to the ground, His hands torn. So, in order to have HIm properly nailed on the cross and paraded on the streets, Jesus’s backbone had to be hooked into the vertical frame of the cross. Imagine how painful this could be. Yes, He bore such pain and suffering for us. Compared to such pain and the constant beating by the Roman soldiers, our hardships and suffering are totally insignificant.

Point # 3: Our loving God’s answer to our problems is simply this “I shall never leave you all alone.” He has a plan for every single one of us.

Then there was Cowan, Mrs. Charles Cowan, who inspired us with her ‘Streams in the Desert’ book. Read about her here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lettie_Cowman She had the difficult task of evangelism in Japan during the early 1900s.

Then there was Watchman Nee, a Chinese church leader who worked in China also in the same period of the early 1900s. https://www.google.com/search?sxsrf=ACYBGNSBuyhgxvUyUt24ChnN4WfJdM59Hg%3A1573075434377&ei=6jnDXYDNFsHez7sPppKPwA4&q=watchman+nee&oq=watchman+nee&gs_l=psy-ab.3..35i39j0l9.15932.17776..18577…0.0..0.344.3336.0j9j6j1……0….1..gws-wiz…….0i22i10i30._fpz5_gS6cg&ved=0ahUKEwiA6uHTwtblAhVB73MBHSbJA-gQ4dUDCAo&uact=5 He was constantly prosecuted for his Christian belief. Even when bedridden, he continued the Lord’s work through the most tiring and difficult times in the Peoples’ Republic of China. Today there are heaps of Chinese who are Christians through the inspired works of Watchman Nee and his key follower, Witness Lee.

The point to be made here is that hardship, suffering, stress and sickness are constantly present in our lives. We need to think of these as just minor bumps in our lives’ journeys and look forward to the happy days that are bound to come our way.

Point # 4: Living on Earth is just a temporary refuge as our permanent place of residence is in Heaven.

What if the hardship, the suffering, the stress and the pain still persist throughout oour lives. My wife, who had a persistent backache and a persistent headache, has now adopted the following small prayer that I can recommend to you: “I thank you Lord for your continued blessings. I ask Lord for your guidance in my life. Show me the way, the path that You want me to follow. In Jesus name, I pray.” She now focusses her attention on other pursuits telling herself that those backaches and headaches are but temporary occurences until the day when she will be welcomed into the Lord’s mansion. She now watches Chinese dramas on YouTube, reads fictions borrowed from the Library, visits our children and keeps up his cutlinary skills.

Point # 5: The Story of Job.

How do we trust God even when our lives are not fair and we suffer for no good reason? Job’s story invites us to consider what it means that God runs the world by wisdom, and how this truth can bring peace in dark times. https://www.holyspiritspeaks.org/testimonies/biblical-story-of-job/?gclid=Cj0KCQiA-4nuBRCnARIsAHwyuPqIRTU-Th50qdp5QG6s0mcvcO7CJiSGmQyOxk1Oo1N1MzlT-9f6x3AaAr9ZEALw_wcB

What is the key lesson for us in the book of Job? https://youtu.be/GswSg2ohqmA

Job was a person who feared God and led a very pious life, obeying God’s commands. He was also a very rich man - with a large and nice family. He had extensive flocks and was an upright man. He was always careful not to do any evil. But Satan argued with God that Job was faithful to Him because he had everything - wealth, loving family, land and flocks. Satan argued that if these possessions were taken away from him, he would surely be the first to turn and curse God.

God took away Job’s wealth, but Job continued to praise God. God then made Job’s faminly members deserted him, but still Job continued to praise God and to pray to God for His forgiveness. His friends left him, accusing him wrongly of having sinned against God. Yet Job remained faithful to God. Then God allowed Satan to afflict Job with diseases on his body. And yet, Job still sang praises to God.

Eventually, God restored Job to his original status and showered him with more of His blessings.

So, when we meet with hardship and sufferings inflicted upon us, God might just be letting Satan to do these to us. We need to be patient and allow God to do what He needs to do in His time.

https://www.holyspiritspeaks.org/testimonies/biblical-story-of-job/?gclid=Cj0KCQiA-4nuBRCnARIsAHwyuPqIRTU-Th50qdp5QG6s0mcvcO7CJiSGmQyOxk1Oo1N1MzlT-9f6x3Az

Streams in the Desert 荒漠甘泉 https://youtu.be/31p1u1jpB0o

Tohu # 1: Ki te kore he wheako o nga uauatanga me nga mamae, me pehea e ako ai tatou kia atawhai?
Tohu # 2: Whakaarohia nga mamae o Ihu i te whenua.
Tohu # 3: Ko te whakautu a to tatou Atua aroha ki o tatou raru ko tenei noa iho "E kore rawa ahau e whakarere i a koutou katoa." Kei a ia he mahere mo tatou katoa.
Tohu # 4: Ko te noho i te whenua he taaparinga poto noa kei te Rangi to tatou nohoanga pumau.
Tohu # 5: Te Maarama o Job.
I ako mai ratau i nga mahi he i mahia e matou. Tatari noa."
Tohu # 2: Ae, kua mate a Ihu mo tatou, mo o tatou hara, i te ripeka. I tino ma, kaore rawa he he. Tei roto i To'na basileia i te ra'i ra ua ma'iti Oia ia haere mai i te ao nei no te amo i te mau hara a te taata. Me whakaaro noa mo tenei huihuinga. E toru tekau ma toru nga tau a Ihu i te ao me te i te whenua. Kaore ia i te ata i a ia i konei. I mamae ia me te kore amuamu.
Tohu # 3: Ana ko Cowan, ko Mrs Charles Cowan, nana i whakahihiko i a tatou me tana pukapuka 'Streams in the Desert'.
I reira ko Watchman Nee, he kaiarahi haahi Hainamana e mahi ana i Haina i te wa ano o nga tau 1900.
Ko ia tonu i whakawakia mo tana whakapono Karaitiana. Ahakoa tona moenga, i haere tonu tana mahi a te Ariki i roto i nga wa tino uaua me nga uaua i roto i nga Peehi 'Republic o Haina. I tenei ra kei reira nga puranga o Haina he Karaitiana na roto i nga mahi whakahihiri a Watchman Nee me tana akonga matua, ko Saksi Lee.
I a Ihu ingoa, ko ahau.
He tangata taonga nui hoki ia - he hapu nui, he ataahua. He nui ana hipi, he tangata tika hoki ia. He mea tupato tonu ia kia kaua e mahi i tetahi kino.
Kua whakarerea ia e ona hoa, he whakapae kaore i he ki te Atua.
