What is Nerdle?

Nerdle is a numbers game. There is one equation we need to solve every day at the Nerdle website. It starts with six rows of eight column spaces which normally called tiles. The six rows represent the six attempts we are given to logically guess at the right equation.

There is no bracket in the equation and the usual operations ranking applies - that of multiplication and division to be answered first before the plus and minus operations. The logic to play this game is to start with an equation we know that contains five different digits and four operational signs that contains an equal sign ” = “. Logic dictates that the equal sign must be in one of three tiled positions - fifth, sixth, or seventh.

Let us now proceed to show an example. Our first attempt is the equation which we know is correct: that is the equation 4 * 6 + 8 = 3 2. Note that the five digits chosen are different digits and that we use only two operational signs of multiply ” * ” and of addition ” + ” to start with the equal ” = ” sign in the sixth position. The NERDLE app gives us four green tiles and four black tiles. Green tiles represent correct digit or sign in the correct tiled position. Black tiles tell us that no such digit (like 4, 8, and 3 here) or the sign (addition ” + ” here) in the solution.

We now test is a deduction sign is present by entering 9 * 6 - 2 = 5 2. We find that the ” - ” deduction sign and the digit ” 5 ” are not in the solution, but another digit ” 2 ” is coloured purple, which means that the solution has two digit 2’s. We next test is a division sign ” / ” is present by entering 2 * 6 / 1 = 1 2. When the ” / ” sign is black, we know that the correct answer is 2 * 6 * 1 = 1 2 is the correct solution.

This one above may be difficult to explain if we are not familiar with fractions. The multiplication and the division operations are to be equally treated in time. So, 3 / 7 (as a fraction) and multiplied by 21, gives us 3 * 3 which then equals to 9. We cannot do the 3 / 7 first as this would not produce an integer. 7 as a denominator can be cancelled off with 21 as the nominator to produce the number 3.
