月饼 Mooncakes

This article is not a Chinese version of the previous Mid-Autumn Festival article, although it is based on the same theme. If you are learning English (or learning Chinese), you will find this article particularly useful.

In Hanyu Pinyin: Zhè piān wénzhāng bùshì zhōngqiū jié de zhōngwén bǎn, suīrán shì tóng yīgè huàtí. Rúguǒ nǐ zhèngzài xuéxí yīngyǔ, nǐ huì fāxiàn zhè piān wénzhāng tèbié yǒuyòng.

我们使用从奥克兰图书馆借来的这本书作为学习英语的来源。而且，如果你正在学习汉语，这本书也是有用的，因为它有罗马化的汉语拼音来指导你的发音。

We use this book borrowed from Auckland Library as a source of learning the English Language. And, if you are learning Chinese Language, this book is also of use as it has the romanized hanyu pinyin to guide your pronunciation.

Wǒmen shǐyòng cóng àokèlán túshū guǎn jiè lái de zhè běn shū zuòwéi xuéxí yīngyǔ de láiyuán. Érqiě, rúguǒ nǐ zhèngzài xuéxí hànyǔ, zhè běn shū yěshì yǒuyòng de, yīnwèi tā yǒu luómǎ huà de hanyu pīnyīn lái zhǐdǎo nǐ de fǎ yīn.

Tú tú rènwéi tā de mǔqīn yǐjīng yànjuànle zuò jiāwù.

Tutu thought that her mother had been tired of doing housework.

“妈妈，我想告诉你一个笑话，那好吗？”
“对不起，我现在不想听一个笑话。”
“Māmā, wǒ xiǎng gàosù nǐ yīgè xiàohuà, nà hǎo ma?” “Duìbùqǐ, wǒ xiànzài bùxiǎng tīng yīgè xiàohuà.”

“Mum, I want to tell you a joke, is that all right?”
“Sorry, I do not want to listen to a joke now.”

Mum, Why are you unhappy? Māmā, nǐ wèishéme bù kāixīn?

今天是中秋节。爸爸又去了海外工作。他后天才回来。我们需要多一些家庭的人在一起庆祝中秋，才回高兴。对吗？
Today is the Mid-Autumn Festival Day. Dad is away to work overseas. He is only coming on back the day after tomorrow. We need more family members together to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival to be happy. Right?
Jīntiān shì zhōngqiū jié. Bàba qù hǎiwài gōngzuò. Tā hòutiān huílái. Wǒmen xūyào gèng duō de jiātíng chéngyuán lái zai ziqi qìngzhù zhōngqiū jié. Duì ma?

妈妈，我们邀请住在隔壁的刘大爷来和我们一起庆祝中秋节。他一个人住，没有任何亲戚来拜访他。
Māmā, wǒmen yāoqǐng zhù zài gébì de liú dàyé lái hé wǒmen yīqǐ qìngzhù zhōngqiū jié. Tā yīgè rén zhù, méiyǒu rènhé qīnqī lái bàifǎng tā.

Mum, shall we invite Grand Uncle Liu living next door to join us. He is living alone without any relative visiting him.

是的，那会让我开心。我相信刘大爷也会很开心。
Shì de, nà huì ràng wǒ kāixīn. Wǒ xiāngxìn liú dàyé yě huì hěn kāixīn.

Yes, that will make me happy. I am sure Grand Uncle Liu will also be happy too.

你想吃哪种月饼？我们有红豆月饼，椰子月饼，蛋黄月饼，冰淇淋月饼，巧克力月饼和碎肉月饼。
Nǐ xiǎng chī nǎ zhǒng yuèbǐng? Wǒmen yǒu hóngdòu yuèbǐng, yēzi yuèbǐng, dànhuáng yuèbǐng, bīngqílín yuèbǐng, qiǎokèlì yuèbǐng hé suì ròu yuèbǐng.

Which type of mooncakes do you want to eat? We have red beans mooncakes, coconut mooncakes, mooncakes with egg yolk, ice-cream mooncakes, chocolate mooncakes and minced meat mooncakes.

妈妈，我怎么切月饼对我们三个人都公平？
Māmā, wǒ zěnme qiè yuèbǐng duì wǒmen sān gèrén dōu gōngpíng?

Mum, how do I cut the mooncakes to be fair to all three of us?

您不必切成三个相等的部分。把每个月饼切成四块，让刘大爷有两块，好吗？
Nín bùbì qiè chéng sān gè xiāngděng de bùfèn. Bǎ měi gè yuèbǐng qiè chéng sì kuài, ràng liú dàyé yǒu liǎng kuài, hǎo ma?

You don’t have to cut into three equal parts. Just cut each mooncake into four pieces and let Grand Uncle Liu have two pieces, alright?

妈妈问：从一个月饼你切成四块相等的块。你现在可以切成八块相等的月饼吗？
Māmā wèn: Cóng yīgè yuèbǐng nǐ qiè chéng sì kuài xiāngděng de kuài. Nǐ xiànzài kěyǐ qiè chéng bā kuài xiāngděng de yuèbǐng ma?

Mum asked: “From four pieces of one mooncake, can we further cut into eight equal pieces?”

Tú tú fǎnyìngle yīhuǐ'er shuō:“Shì de, wǒ kěyǐ.”

Tu Tu reflected for a while and said, “Yes, I can.”

然后他拿起刀子，将月饼从左上角到右下角进一步切割两条对角线，然后从右上角到左下角再切割另一条。

Ránhòu tā ná qǐ dāozi, jiāng yuèbǐng cóng zuǒshàng jiǎo dào yòu xiàjiǎo jìnyībù qiēgē liǎng tiáo duì jiǎo xiàn, ránhòu cóng yòushàng jiǎo dào zuǒxià jiǎo zài qiēgē lìng yītiáo.

Then he took the knife and cut the mooncake further across the two diagonal lines from top left to bottom right and then another cut from top right to bottom left.

刘大爷：“当我们切成八块时，有些块可能没有蛋黄，因此可能不那么好吃。”
Liú dàyé:“Dāng wǒmen qiè chéng bā kuài shí, yǒuxiē kuài kěnéng méiyǒu dànhuáng, yīncǐ kěnéng bù nàme hào chī.”

Grand Uncle Liu: “When we cut into eight pieces, some pieces may not have the egg yolk and therefore may not be so tasty.”

看，我甚至可以将花型月饼切成相等的部分。 Kàn, wǒ shènzhì kěyǐ jiāng huā xíng yuèbǐng qiè chéng xiāngděng de bùfèn.

Look, I can even cut the flower type mooncake into equal parts.
