Auckland’s Traffic Congestion
Auckland’s traffic congestion is getting worse by the day.
Reporter Simon Maude of East & Bays Courier has reported on March 1, 2017 that “travel times have steadily increased each year and dramatically worsened with the start of work on the $268 million Southern Corridor Improvements Project (SCIP).” What is more alarming is the fact that the SCIP, due for completion by October 2018, may not be able to solve the congestion dilemma.
How can we reduce the traffic congestion on Auckland’s roads?
Peter Nunns (January 24th, 2017) at http://transportblog.co.nz/tag/congestion/ has suggested three ways (working simultaneously) to improving our traffic woes. The three ways are: (1) congestion pricing; (2) improving Auckland’s rapid translate network; and (3) improving the cycleway network.

Allow me here to suggest three further steps of getting our roads decongested.
(1) Get rid of commercial vehicles from our roads and motorways during peak times such as from 8:30 am to 10:00 am and from 4:30 pm to 6:00 pm.
(2) Change the Dedicated Bus Lanes to Bus and T3 lanes, thus encouraging car pooling.
(3) Have a system in place to allow car drivers the permit to charge for car-rides (like getting the P endorsement on their licenses and having commercial insurances).
Of course, we should continue to improve our public transportation system especially the journeys to Auckland Airport. A railway link from either Puhinui or Manukau Station has been suggested but alas this has fallen on deaf ears.
Are there any more suggestions for NZTA?
