I was passing through Tokoroa just last Christmas and I was impressed. Yes, if only I could have my say I would have invested here. But of course, my wife had a totally different outlook. Her remarks included: “If this City is so good, why aren’t people investing?” “Something must be wrong here - It’s like a ghost town.” “No, I’m not investing here and if you do, … … … ” To save our over fifty years of marriage, I did not pursue this possibility any further.
But I did my research. Having worked for Fletchers in the past and saw the fall and rise of small cities in New Zealand in the past, I did my homework. Although I am unable to convince my wife (and one of the trustees of my family trust) to invest, I must recommend this township to my friends, at home or abroad.
Tokoroa does have a lot of pluses. For one it does sit along the main Highway 1, between Taupo and Hamilton and inside the Waikato District Council’s jurisdiction. It is located at the crossroads between dairy farmland of South Waikato and the forestry of Central North Island. In short, the location is excellent.
“Tokoroa is the gateway to many of the central North Island’s tourist attractions. It also abounds with scenic attractions of its own which are “off-the-beaten-track”. There is easy access to bush walks, scenic reserves, lakes, and rivers, which are all steeped in Maori legend. Visit Pokaiwhenua, and Hatupatu rock, learn about the stories and legends which make these places sacred.” quoted from

Then why is there no takers? One would ask.
My answer is simple. We are all falling into the trap of ‘herd instinct’. We fail to see opportunities that are meeting our eyes.
Wake Up, Aucklanders!
Li Ka Sing (Hong Kong) has Sars to thank for his richness and you now have Tokoroa.
